3.0L V6 engine...compression test?
« on: Feb 16, 2010, 04:41:02 PM »
I have a 3.0 V6 engine but its out of the truck and is mostly just a block with the heads still on...i want to do a compression test to see if the engine needs to be rebuilt....does anyone know how i should go about this? and does anyone know if a leakdown test would be enough to know if it needs to be rebuilt? thanks in advance.

do you really want to rebuild that motor???   they are kinda a piece of crap.    and there are alot better options then the 3.0      plus you have half the battle won already  with it being out of the rig.   just my  :twocents:

A leak down test is a really good test. You hear nothing your good to go. Means everything "as far a compression" is ok.

Air coming out the valve cover, means, air is getting by the rings and needs to be rebuilt.

Air coming out the water jackets, means bad head gasket.

Air coming out the intake, means bad intake valves.

Air coming out the exhaust means bad exhaust valves.

None of these test, check for bearing wear and or other failures or problems ie oil pump, water pump. But i think its a better overall test, then a simple compression test.

I know alot of people ding the 3.0 but if rebuilt property can be a good motor.

If you see it, its for sale.

zippo thanks for all that information its greatly appreciated....and axled89 my reason for doing the 3.0 is so that i dont have to deal with all the wiring and ect. a simple rebuild and then drop it in and go is what im hoping for  :crossed:

well like zippo said take your time , and just do it right and you'll have a ok motor.   if you need some heads that are good but need to be rebuilt then let me know.   i've had these ones looked at by napa's machine shop, and they said they are rebuildable.    let me know .   good luck.
