'85 toy pu AC to Air conversion?
« on: Nov 25, 2002, 08:00:44 AM »
I want to convert the AC compressor to an air
compressor, and haven't been able to find much
info online to know where to begin.  does anyone
know of any links or have any personal experience
doing this? what do I need to change on the
compressor?  :dunno:where do the air lines go?

I think you might want to opt for a larger displacement compressor. Isnt a 22R AC compressor rather small as compared to like a 350 Chevy with a York compressor?

I don't know if it makes any difference, but I have a 22RE. Either way it probibly is the same compressor.  I'm just looking for a cheap solution to on board air, and my AC isn't working anyway.

That would be cool if it works because its already mounted and wired up.
Dont have to make a bracket or any thing as major.

Any one have any experience with stock AC Compressors?

Pretty easy, disconect the lines add air lines and there ya go. It is a rotary style pump though. they need oil to work over time. that means putting it in in the intake and taking it out before you air up your tires. or just dont use oil and the pump will live a shorter life. ;D

Sounds doable.   can i run oil thru it and
then drain the oil before using the compressor,
like before any major trips? or would it be better
to run an inline oiler? would the oil give me
trouble when airing tires or locker (future mod ;D)

Thanks for the help.

An inline oiler is the thing. You need an oil separator (looks kind of like a water trap) to go in after. I would use a tank to separate more after the filter, then plumb back to the air line, arb's etc.

Look in a big truck wrecking yard for the tank

all you have to do is hock a line from the high side to a air tank, then run an oiler to low side that they use on oil filter cushers. Then put a air filter on the end of the oiler. You wont get to much oil this way. You will want to drain the tank all the time because you will get water from the air. The york conpresser is a good one. The toyota conpresser is a good one if you have it but not as good as the york. They have cheap tank at habor frat. Maybe I could get you a air tank from work out of a school bus. If you have any Questins just ask

I have a toy a/c based system.
I can air up 4 33-inch tires from 12 to 30 psi
in about 10 minutes.
On one occasion, I aired up 2 additional vehicles.
Uses the factory A/C button (Air/Compressor) and idle-up system.
I  just don't see that the extra expense, and fabrication
hassles, of a York are worth the effort.

Budbuilt has a bracket to mount a York next to the factory AC unit. I don't know how it works, but it looks neat. I would think, just judging by the picks, that you might have a problem with belt tension.

I converted mine...a/c never did work when I got my 4runner anyway...I even made my own tank out of 4" pipe..did all the plumbing and whatnot...simple overall once you get all the parts collected...I have a regular compressor switch wired in also...so it opens and closes as needed...I run my tank to 125 psi and that a/c pump will run it to 200 psi easily...inline oil seprator/filter, oiler on intake side as well as a small air filter...works great...

This sounds like a really cool idea.  my ac doesn't work anyway.  I'm kind of a newb with a/c and air compressors though.  What exactly do you have to do.  I have an 86' 4runner with the 22re.

Yes! On-board air is awesome! I've got a york on a my farm service truck with a 9 gallon tank. Airs up tires and runs air tools all day long. Kilby enterprises  sells some parts to do it. I just did a search on "On board Air" and found quite a bit of info.
