Variable Resistor, Blower motor
« on: Apr 19, 2009, 08:26:01 PM »
Does anyone know where the Variable resistor is on my 88 4runner, Im assuming its built into the whole evaporator behind the glove box? I have a Donor 4runner and have swaped just about everything, My blower motor only blows on HIGH, and its getting real old! Thanks for any help :gap:

It is located on the bottom of the blower box close to the blower motor. You will need a philips screwdriver and after laying on your back, look for the wires pluged into it. It is located above the passengers right foot. Be careful removing it, the wire coils are very easy to damage.

Ok i Pulled the glove box and messed with it, I think i found my problem, It doesnt even have one! the previous owner must have removed it, Im 98 percent sure this is the connecter that it would plug into, because there is nothing else there!  :ack:

Mine only blows on med-high and high.  The bottom two do nothing... would this also apply to me?(note - being as this is So. Cal in my case, it's only a minor issue as when you want A/C it's always "full-power-OMG-I'm-Melting" anyways.

Mine does the same as Plekto described. High and Super-high work great, but there's no low or medium.

I can't seem to figure out which plug/box it is. I see a black relay-looking device on the right side of the blower cage. Is that it?

Couldn't locate any information in the FSM either.

Anyone have a part # or a picture?

85 4runner.

Cool site! They seem to think this is the part:

But that's the actual slide assembly, which isn't what Marlin described.

no that doesnt really look like the one off my donor 4runner, looks like the bottom of a relay with windings on it like marlin said and they are exposed.

oooh - pic helps a lot.  Mine's a bit... crusty and blackish...

My guess is too high a resistance so it only gets enough power to work/activate at the higher settings

Usually the "thin wire" resistor "melts" and thus is an open circuit - and therefore no current flow = no fan.

Since there are seperate resistors for each fan setting - its possible that one melts and the other still work.
Since most people use the lowest setting the most - thats the first one that usually breaks.

Long ago I posted the Ohm ratings and the estimated wattage requirements for the individual fan speeds.
Probably in either YotaTech or Pirate.

Anyway - calculations showed that using a high wattage ceramic resistor would "solve" the problem of the melting but at a rather high cost, and also not address "cooling" issues.
There is a reason the resistor is in the air plenum.

yeah yeah - still IFS...
