v8 guys!
« on: Jun 30, 2009, 10:37:21 AM »
well i have practicly everything for my sas/4.3 engine swap!
but...

I also have a buick 350 in the garage with 24k mis and was wondering if it'd be worth installing that
I'm a big buick guy and i love v8s, but i dont want this thing breaking the axles(ihave 30 longs and hub gears) to all hell or having heating problems (have AA v8 al rad)
so my questions are?

how well does the stock rear axle and built front axle hold up to v8 torque?
is it hard to keep cool in certain situations like traffic
is it a nessisity to convert to a serpentine system?
are things easy to work on...nothing stupid like having to unmount/raise engine to change an alt or something? lol
my engine is a 73 2barrel so the output is low say arouns 155 sea net ho at 4600 and 275 ft lbs @ 1300
i love your sig your down to a half of a maverick

This is just my opinion but I would not put a V-8 in and keep any of the Toyota running gear including the tranny and t-cases. 14-bolt, D-60, Altas or Stak T-case and I cannot remenber the model tranny but it has a granny low. If you could find the latest model Tundra rearend that would be golden. Like I said, this is my opinion but I have seen to many V-8 powered rigs with Toyota running gear leaveing parts all over the trails.

I run a 350SBC turbo 400 Danna 300 toy axles with 5.29 gears welded front and rear.  Bobby Longs 30 spline up front with hub gears and birfs, stock in rear.  I broke my Danna 300 second trip out and have not wheeled it since (So take this for what it is worth).  My truck is also strictly off road.  I believe the front can hold up to the v8 Not sure about the rear I have heard mixed stories. Having said this if I were to do it over I would have gone with 1 tons.  I also run a MC trail 5" kit.  I think this is a great kit however it was not designed for the weight of a v8 and it shows with my truck.  Something to consider with softer springs.  I have tried trimming my body mounts and my shackles still hit them.  You will also need to modify the firewall probably with both engines.  If I was running my truck as a dd I would stick with the original equipment.  Just my   :twocents:

Nope, Topar comes from 1 Toyota truck and 1 Dodge/Mopar truck.  I would like to have a Hemi in my toy though.

Now this all everyones own opinion and experiences but I personally have been running an injected 302 in my truck for 5 years. I have ruined 3 sets of 33" tires and havent even broken a u joint. I am running all Yota running gear, but I guess it depends on your driving skill as well.

I wouldn't recommend going with a v8. I had a toyota with a built 4.3 in it and i blew up two transmisions bare in mind it may have had something to do with my heavy pedal foot but still. I think it really depends on how and where your going to be driving this. You can put a v8 in and make it run cool, there are plenty of options for that.

im running a 92 bronco 351 windsor v-8 in my 85 xtra cab , hooked to the stock g52 ,tcase and drive train and have not even broke a u joint running 39.5 tsl's .

i swapped in a set of 4.88 v-6 rears and not until this weekend started running longfields up front .. i kept my front open and turned out my steering locks and i never broke a birfield . and i run my truck pretty hard .

the only common breakage i have is the stock tranny/tcase mount .

here is my motor , i converted it back to carb , chevy hei , it runs on 3 12v wires it dont get any more simple .

I love my country ,but hate my goverment ...

That thing is pretty sweet. Have you considered running propane?? I take it you don't have to heavy of a foot or you don't get in the rocks to much.

there is soo much land yet untouched here , but the local trails here are seeing alot pressure from atv's and trucks these days and face closure all the time , common thing these days, here is trying to put weight limits on certain trails now trying to keep our rigs off the trails .

alot of our trails here ,are old mining trails from before we were a state 50 yrs ago .. those pics are on a trail not even a hour from the house ,it keeps going till the canada border ..

most make it to the rock garden u see in the picture and turn around .. it just gets better for me after that ..

 i love wheeling alaska .

It sounds awesome!!!! I'm originally from Washington state. I lived in Yakima for most of my life, there was lots of wheeling, I'm sure not as much as you guys have up there. Now I live in San Diego. I love it here but I miss the open space. I have to travel to go wheeling but thankful I don't have to go far. The hammers are close enough and if I don't want to go that far I can go to brocos peak of skeleton plains is right in my back yard. I envy all the wheeling you have up there. It beautiful country.
