Geared Transfer Case Adjustments
« on: Dec 13, 2009, 12:08:31 PM »
Hi,

I am upgrading to a geared transfer case, from a chain driven on my 91 V6 pickup. The adapter plate between the transmission and the tcase makes the drive train a 1/2" longer. I was wondering how much needs to be changed?
I have a full length spline on the front drive shaft, so that's ok.
I lifted the suspension from 3" to 4", so there should be bit of play at the diff end of the drive shaft.
I noticed the centre support bearing mount has a slot, is this enough to shift it back 1/2".

So I think the only serious mod is the cross member/tcase mount. I need to replace the mount (cracked rubber).
Is the 4x HD tcase mount a weld on (could make life a bit easier)? Or is the OEM geared tcase mount already suitable?

What have others done with the 1/2" shift back?

Cheers,

Michael

when i did my duals on my 89 4runner with 3.0, i used the the stock x-member with the 4cyl case mount. bolted right up, so im assuming that maybe the gear drive case is a little shorter than the v6 case

The gear R-150 is shorter than the W -series and R-151.  When you put the v6 adapter on with the gear drive case, The whole package ends up being almost exactly the same length.  I do not think you will ned any driveline adjustments.

Hi,

Got my transmission, adapter plate and new transfer case lined up in the lounge room. Not sure about the overall length yet, but it looks like the shifter for the Tcase is a bit further back - hope the hole in the floor is long enough. But can't do much until the release bearing turns up.

When I bought my V-6 adapter and gear drive case from Marlin years ago he had modified the shifter so I could use the stock He had cut the stick off leaving about a one inch piece. He took a piece of flat stock and drilled two holes in it on a two inch center. Welded the stubon in one hole and the stick in the other. It has worked fine in the last 13 years. Just a side note my V-6 adapters S/N is #17!!!!! :wink2:

Picture of what I am talking about;

Also since It was still IFS I did not have to do anything to the front or rear D-shafts and I had a four inch lift.

Hi,

Just an update on how it worked out for me. The tcase shifter is usable inside the cab, no need to cut the floor or modify the stick.
The center support bearing holes were about an inch further back, so I need to add some holes to the mount (what is a good way to cut/drill slots?).
There rear shaft fits OK.

Cheers,
Michael

If I remember right, I used a burr in my die grinder. If you do not have one, a rat-tail file.
