Please Help - New Rings 22R - resistance seems high
« on: Apr 14, 2009, 08:13:35 AM »
Hello, need advice please.

I'm doing my first 22R rebuild.  When I inserted the new rings into the block, the resistance seems high  when I turn the crank by hand.

I went lite on honing. I was concerned about removing to much material.
Is honing required on a rebuild?

Thanks in advance of any information,
Ernest

Yes, honing is required on a re-ring rebuild the cross hatch pattern is needed to seat the rings. What size rings did you use? Did you check the ring end gap?

You should be fine then, but may experience blow-by and loss of compression when engine gets hot. Did you rotate the crank before you put the pistons in, was it easy or hard to rotate. Also did you lube up the pistons, rings, and cylinder walls well. Also I hope you cleaned and washed the block after honing till it was super clean.

main and rod bering new.  crank was smooth, no resistance spinning after torq.

the resistance is from the rings.  you can hear the ring risistance if u listen closely, while turning.   spec call 2 to 6 lbs resistance approx. i think, i'm with in that.

just want second advise.

And you installed the rings according to the manufacturer?

Most Toyota R engine piston rings have a directional 2nd ring that flexes in the piston due to the angle cut on the inside corner of the ring. If you assembled the rings according to the instructions, you should be OK.

have you installed the rings per the FSM? it is the one and only source when it comes to that kind of stuff, if you don't have one, you can download it from www.ncttora.com
