90's V6 Motor
« on: Jul 02, 2009, 07:51:37 AM »
I've given up on selling my 84 flat bed and now I am just trying to get a good trade out of it. A guy e-mailed me and wants to trade me a 90's v6 red 4x4 (toyota of course). I haven't found out the year and he is real slow at getting back to me. I know its probably late 80's early 90's. Its gotta be older then an 85 because its definitely IFS. I will put a picture up maybe you guys will know what year it is? Anyways I remember hearing bad things about the V6 and to steer clear of any year with that motor. My truck i am trading isnt exactly a show truck it has a lot of problems.... A LOT. Came from an ex meth addict if that gives you a better idea of all strange issues my truck has. (didnt realize until after I bought it) In the pictures Mine is the flat bed and the one I am looking into trading for is the red one. Is it a good trade? Any input is helpful! Thank you!!!!!

I really like the way it looks and it would be nice to have a back seat for my boyfriends daughters car seat. And of course its a little faster...

Thanks!!!!

I would like a extra cab like that but I do not like the 3.0 V6. There are some good ones out there, I have seen more bad then good.  Sounds like you need the extra room with the kid and all, just be ready to rebuild the motor worst case.  Then put you 84 front axle under it and your set. Theres some love for ya  :smooch:

The board is always slow leading up to weekends, especially holiday ones. Check out when a lot of the last posts were in some of the different sections!

Get some more info on mileage and everything else.

Find out of the HG recall has been done, do a compression check, and go through it carefully.  Personally, I don't have anything against the 3.0s.  Treat them right, and they'll be ok.  I've done heads on 2 of the them however.  The one that is in my truck has 240K on it, and runs great.

The grill says it is '89-91 era truck, the '92-'95 has the sombrero emblem, however the airbag steering wheel would indicate it is '92 or newer, unless airbags were an option on the '89-'91 SR5's.

The 3.0V6 engine is a good engine, its only real issues are burnt valves and HG.  It is scene to be wimpy when compared to the 3.4 and the 4.3 Vortec, but then again when it debuted it was the HP engine you could get in a mini truck.  The HG issue was/has been remedied, and providing you have the heads checked by a machine shop and don't re-use the TTY head bolts, reoccurring HG issues usually aren't something to be concerned about.  You can build the 3.0. but it isn't cheap, and most now swap the 3.4 into it instead.

It will/should have more power than the 22re, but your mpg will be less.  I can average about 20 on the hwy w/my heavy(4600lbs w/o passengers or gear) '90, and about 15-17 around town.

The rear jump seats will hold a child seat, or two children, but not that comfy for adults.

Get the VIN# and call the Service desk at Maita, Florin, Roseville Toyota etc., and ask them to run the # to make sure all of the recall work has been done, and check up on its service history.

If the engine has been maintained, the recall work has been done, compression is good, IMO it is a "no brainer" straight across trade.

One thing that you should consider is what your wheeling goals are.  It will cost more to run duals w/the 3.0 than w/the 22re, and of course you would have do an SAS if you want to wheel the hardest trails or wheel w/the throttle down, however this doesn't mean that you can't wheel IFS.  I and others have wheeled IFS on Rubicon and Fordyce w/little issues, and Pat IFS experiment just wheeled his IFS Runner on the Rubicon w/33's, and had little issues as well.

Well this is just going to be my daily driver "comfortable" truck so I'm not to worried about building it up for wheelin. I still have another 84 pick up but its waaaaay cleaner. It's the one in my picture. Thank you all very much for your input!!!!!

As a DD it would be a night and day difference between the IFS and the SA, on the street as well as on the trail/forest roads.  The 3rd gen trucks also have more room inside the cab, even though they are in the same size frames.  It would certainly be worth checking out in person and taking it for a test drive.  You might also check some of the used car lot or private sales in sac for an X-cab w/22re so you can compare the performance of the two engines in the same truck.

I have a 1990 SR5 with the same V-6 and 5speed, from the looks of the grill and the interior I am guessing that you have a 1992 because I do see some improvements on your pictures over what came in mine.
