Oil pump
« on: Apr 01, 2009, 03:33:51 PM »
This might be a total noob question, but,(I am a noob) just did a timing chain on my 86 pickup. Now I have a leak at the bottom of the oil pump. I'm thinking I must have rolled the o ring out of the milled slot in the pump body. Leak is there when truck is running, pressure from pump is my best guess. Is there a trick to sealing this up? Thanks in advance for any help. Have a new o ring on the way.(me and the NAPA people are seeing alot of each other these last few days) Later Mac

Are you sure it's not the oil seal?

if that little o-ring slipped out at all and got pinched then thats the problem. I like to coat it in grese so that it sticks in its groove when i put it together. It may be the seal though  :imwithstupid:. If theres a groove in the crank pulley from where the seal was riding you can sand the seal down so that when you bottom it out in the pump it rides in a different spot on the crank...pulley.

The back of the pulley is bone dry. The front seal seems to be good. No burrs or issues with install. I'll give grease a shot. This is turning into a PITA. Thanks for the help, first Toyota, cool little truck. Later Mac

The oil pump bolts are supposed to have a sealant applied to the threads when the pump is installed. Did you do this? If not, that could be the source of the leak. I believe the top bolt is the one that usually seeps oil out.

Well it was the o-ring. Rolled out of groove when installed. Replaced, all is well. Thanks for the push in the right direction. Later Mac
