trail riding idle question.
« on: Mar 28, 2009, 01:39:41 PM »
Was thinking the other day trying to figure if something is possible.

Is there a way to make a truck with a carb automatically idle up. When I am going down the trail and I am rolling up on something my truck just lugs down and dies. I believe on a fuel injected engine the idle air controller would automatically give it a little more throttle and keep the engine running, is there anything I can do to get the same effect with the carb? Right now I am idleing @ 800 rpm should I just adjust the idle up to say 1200 and leave it at that, or is there a better solution?

I also kinda kicked around the idea of a universal cruise control with a magnetic pickup, but instead of mounting the sender on the driveshaft, putting it on the crank pulley so it would hold RPM instead of Ground  speed. I also like that because if I was winching I could set it at say 2000 rpm and just leave it there so I would not have to worry about holding the throttle, working the winch, and keeping an eye on everything going on.
There is a fine line between clever and stupid, I just wish I knew when I crossed it.

What about a cable throttle like a choke, but to pull the throttle where you need it.

 I know, just it would be nice to be able to idle over stuff like my friends in their FJ40s. Just put 5.29s in my truck and I thought that would make more of a difference, guess there is only so much that can be asked of the hamsters living in my 22r.

might just start looking for bits to do a 4.3 swap.

You could use the solenoid kicker for the A/C to bump up your rpms. Or some have used a hand throttle to do it. Personally I use that little pedal on the right to achieve more rpms in my truck. :gap:

If you'er caburated, then when you get to the trail head, you could just get out and adjust the idle control up on the carb. Then adjust it down when you get on the street.

Pick up a thumb shifter speed selector from a bike shop and mount it to the shifter.  Run the cable through the fire wall and attach it to the throttle on the carb, as you would for cruise control.  I haven't tried this yet, but in theory it should work similar to the the bike brake being used as a throttle control, but allow you to set/hold the throttle at 1 of 6 settings, if you use a 6speed shifter.

Very simple.

I brazed a small bracket on to the throttle linkage. Drilled a hole in it and put a throttle stop on. A throttle stop is a piece of brass rod with a hole drilled all the way through it. The hole is threaded all the way. Then there is another small hole drilled in the side that the cable will go through. Mount the throttle stop to the throttle with a small screw. Stick the cable through the small hole in the side Run another small screw in the other side and tighten to hold the cable in place. I got the throttle stop from a lawn mower shop. Some auto parts stories carry them also.

I only use mine for idle up for my OBA and OB shower. My wife uses it when she has to start on a hill.

I like the bike shifter deal, was talking to some of the guys in the club and they suggested that as well. I had seen a guy once with a brake handle on his shifter used as a hand throttle but that would not have held to keep the rpm up while winching. I think I am goign to have to swing by a bike shop tomorrow. :gap:

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions all.

And Duffil, the dual cases are in the plans, just still recovering from buying tires, gears and lockers. Probably wont get the money for dualls together till the fall atleast.
