Charge and Brake light staying on?
« on: May 18, 2003, 03:32:52 PM »
84 yota 22r,  replaced alternator and voltage regulator and now my charge and brakelight are staying on. :maddest:  Anyone ever had this prob.? :dunno: I checked the neg bat post to the wire that attaches to the back of the alt and got 12.62 voltage.  Does that mean that its charging and something else is wrong?  Computer going out?  Please help

HEY????  Cand I just throw in a 90 amp alt or what?  Do I have to do any wire upgrading?  Will it fry my battery?  Do I need two batteries if I get a 90 amp?  I want to put lights and a winch and some other misc things on the rig and want enough power to use them all at the same time if needs be?  Mobile Vetrinarian Surgury Unit.

By the way J I got the bed on...looks like the front half of the truck was dipped in mud!  Dont care though...you know why?  My tailgate works!  Hang on to that alternator.  If the one I got today ends up not working out, Ill need it.  Thanks

I got a 90 in my truck. They only thing you need to do is add a second wire from the charge to the battery. The stock toyota harness will not handle the juice. I put in a... well i think it was 4AWG wire dirrect from the positive post to the terminal according to their dirrections. So far i have not had any problems

You can use a 90 amp. with a added wire like remo says. if you got one that will bolt up, go for it!

Here's a sad story about rebuilt alts. I have an 83 22r, alt went bad so I took it to NAPA auto parts for an exchange. They checked it out, took the numbers off of the unit and gave me a replacement.
The moment I fired up the truck, all hell broke loose. Alt and brake lite came on, then total failure of the entire electrical system. Every fuse was blown, all lights were blown (bulbs actually broken), fuseable links melted, etc.  Unregulated power surge took out everything to do with electrics.
NAPA had given me an 'A' type alt and mine was a 'B' manufactured in Canada.  I told the counter man that this was a Canadian built truck and things may be a tad different. They later claimed their computer program was in error.
It took me three weeks and 500 bucks to get back on the road. When I turned to NAPA for a refund on expenses, they had changed the computer program and told me it was my fault.  The store owner refused to to pay up!
I have not stepped foot into a NAPA store since and never will again, they suck.

I'm not sure about later models, but there is a charge relay located on the passenger side panel in the cab, my alternator went to hell and it took this relay with it.  I bought a new alternator and nothing seemed to work, nobody new anything, so I traced the wiring to this relay, it was shot as well.  Threw everything in the trash and ran a 100amp delco three wire to the battery, I've never looked back at the toyotalectric blues.

Where did u get that 100amp delco?  ??? I WANT WANT WANT!!!   :greengrin:Oh Yeah,  Where do the three wires run to?

BTW-  I have also learned the hardway.   Replaced Alternator two times  before I started asking questions on three different boards and finally traced it back to that stupid relay. :maddest:  Its 70 bucks at the dealer,  I will get it for around 60.  Hope all that money fixes such a small problem   :chug:

its called a big case alternator.  it is about an inch bigger around than normal delco.  you will have to tinker with the mounting a bit more than the small case but its really worth it if you want to have that one rewound later for more amps!  also it hase bigger rectifier and diodes than the small case so it naturally will last longer!

I had to fab it in on the left side where the air pump emissions piece would go, the bigger delco's won't fit in the stock position, Downey tried like hell to make it happen.

Wire's,  one is the battery, two is a the wire from the regulator to the battery, these usually are what's called self exciting, they turn on and off when the pulley spins (this is the easiest set up).  Three, is a wire set up as an on and off switch, deleting the self exciting system, I run this set up and  I can turn the alternator off and on when I want,  Reason I went with this system is that my MSD ignition wouldn't turn off the motor without the the alternator being off as well (go figure)

Summit Racing has some good priced powermaster delco's  100 amp for a $100.
