Marlins Spare Tire
« on: Feb 28, 2009, 01:27:28 AM »
How does Marlin stuff a 37" spare tire up under his bobbed bed.

Did he modify the mounts or crossmember ?

I'd like to stuff a 35" tire up under my 85 Longbed even after it is bobbed 10-14"

Anyone done this before ?

33" is the biggest you can fit even without a bobbed bed. 35" won't fit under there, even without being bobbed a 35 will interfere with the rear axle and springs.

Ive seen a 37 fit up between the framerails aired down, but it sat flush with the bottom of the frame because it was under a flatbed floor that sat higher then the stock bed floor.
Bobbed 84 xtra cab, pickin up parts as I go.

If at first you do not succeed, put it in 4low and try again.

About the only way to do it, would have to go on top of the frame rails.

If you've ever seen how much gear and spare parts marlin brings you will understand why his spare is where it is.

Spares don't have to be in a practical location if you don't need them often enough to warrent it so. Besides under the bed keeps that much more weight low, and therefore his center of gravity low. Personally I'd build some sort of storage compartment in that location to keep other items in, then put the spare in the bed.

Well, between the frame rail, you have about 36.5"s which is perfect for a 37. But Marlin does carry a 35" spare not a 37. But if you can relocate a the crosmember then great.

if the tire doesnt hang lower than the spring than how is it gonna mess you up at all. your gunna drag on your springs and bumper way before you would on the tire if it was under there. :twocents:

I agree, under the bed is not a good place for removing the spare if you get a flat on the trail, street use is no problem. But when you carry a lot of  :pokinit: in the rig there's no better place.

My 35" spare fit under the bed with no real issues. The only thing I did was make a heat shield on my exhaust so the heat wouldn't do any damage to the spare since it was like 2 inches from the pipe. I had it under there on the way to the Rubicon and then before we hit the trail I fit it in the bed after leaving some things at my buddy's house in Tahoe.

Good thing too, cause I tore open a tire on the trail.  It mighta sucked to pull it out from under the bed.  :cheese:  Thankfully, we weren't too far from camp when that happened and we didn't have to repack the entire load. We just kinda threw it back in there kinda loose like.  :gap:

I think the springs would protect it, and the rear bumper would limit contact with the ground.

The rig is not a desert racer so access to the spare is not time crucial.

I like the lower COG.

The space seems unused on most rigs.

Has anyone gotten stuck because the tire was under there ?

Space constraints and COG are certainly a good arguements as to putting it there or even it hitting something would make a good arguement for not putting it there.

I'm not sure that getting stuck is any real arguement, but I think the real issue would be whether or not it will able to be removed out from under the truck if you need it and whether or not the tire would be too close to the ground for it to come out and be used. If it can't be removed from under the truck because it's too close to the ground then maybe moving the truck is an option so the tire can be pulled out. But what if the truck can't be moved for some reason? Then what?

Besides, if you didn't have the room for your spare in the truck then you still have to put the flat tire somewhere, don't you? I sure wouldn't want to put it back underneath the truck if it was hard to get out in the first place. But I suppose there's a solution to just about every problem. Like maybe using someone else spare till you get away from a bad situation (if that's the case) and then swapping your spare in place of it.  :dunno:

Just another  :twocents:

I have always kept my spare under my truck, yes I have landed on it but never hurt it. In fact in my 80 pickup not only did I have my spare there but my auxiliary tank was just above that lowering the tire about another 4 to 5 inches. I have to say that I drug that tire over more rocks than any.

Accessing the tire while on an uneven trail where ground clearance might be an issue is a good argument.

Someone mentioned raising the tire by moving the cross member- has anyone done that or have any pics ?

I don't think it can be moved up unless you have a bodylift, if you look it is pretty much against the bottom of the bed as it sits. I was able to bend the section that holds the tire in place up a little on my 4Runner but it had a 2 inch bodylift. Actually it bent itself when I would dump it on a rock so you could call it self clearancing. It kept bending until it contacted the bottom of the bed again so it probably moved about 2 inches total.

I have a 35" MT/R mounted to the bottom of my bed.

The tire is fully inflated and the crossmember has been removed.
I welded a crossmember in front of my rear bumber and after drilling 4 holes through the bed, mounted the factory chain holder to the bottom of the bed using a flat plate so the bolt heads won"t pull through the floor.

I also put a sheet metal heat shield so the 1 1/4" exhaust pipe does not burn my tire.

The major bummer is that the shocks had to be mounted odd ball style because the tire is mounted right in the way!

I was not worried about getting the tire out on the trail, I just had to have it out of the way.

Can you give me and idea of what "mounting the shocks odd ball" means ? Mine are in the stock location on the frame right now.

My 35" in spare fits under the bed, as I mentioned, But I didn't have any shock mounting issues at all.   I'll guess it because mine is a 2nd gend while the 1st gen might have slightly less room under there.  :dunno: :headscratch:

I am using one of those old school  // slanted in the bed spare tire carriers a guy gave me. It kind of looks cool but I've thought about hacking out the cross member and trying this on my '94 since I tend to haul alot of camping crap on the trail.  Sometimes it would just be nice to be able to use your entire bed instead of working around a huge spare.  I have both my shocks to the rear though, so I would have to re-mount...

I might have to go this route. Removing the cross memeber is a good idea to gain ground clearance, and bed space. Anyone else have pics ?

I cut the metal screen out of an old security door, and then cut it to fit accross my bed.  4) bolts and the tire sits right up top.  This gives me full use of the bed, my cooler and camp box fit between the tailgate and the door, toolbox fits between the spare and one bedrail, cookstove fits between the tire and the other bedrail and I can stuff sleeping bags, camp chairs, and other light stuff under the tire, without having to use straps.  :gap:  It does put the spare up a little higher though.
