Toyota/Lexus V8

Anyone tried to put one of those in a truck or runner :headscratch:

Would it be a good engine for a trail rig :dunno:

I am working on one now.  I will post a build thread once it is complete.  Here are a couple of websites with writeups on 1uzfe engine swaps.

I have a 1UZ that replaced the turbo diesel that was in my 1991 4Runner. Adapter plate used to match the factory R15x gearbox to the 1UZ. Custom flywheel and heavy duty clutch kit.

Has a ton more power than any of the factory motor's and sounds great but cooling them can be a mission. I now have a large four core radiator, 16in thermo fan and bonnet vents. Hope that has it sorted.

Matt.

Haha, no pics of the engine bay though so it looks like any other Runner.

It's actually a jap import Surf. Still running the IFS in the front tho :-( Will try and find a shot of the engine bay to show everyone the setup. It's come quite a long way from when I bought it already converted, it was a bit rough but went okay.

It is now running a 3.slow fuel tank with in tank pump, remote mount oil filter, new heavy duty clutch, spare box in whilst R151F is being rebuilt, big 75 series Cruiser radiator, ac pump turned into onboard air with twin tanks, manifold and quick connects etc, rebuilt starter and alternator, petrol dash cluster installed and wired up. Aftermarket oil pressure and temp gauges.

Has a 3in suspension, 2in body lift, 33in Maxis MT's, 15x10 whitespokes, manual hubs, LSD rear, Link ECU, 3in exhaust, disk brake rear conversion.

Plan is to finish gearbox build and then look at a coil solid axle front swap. Prolly not this year though :-( Quite a few of these conversions around in NZ and Aus.

Matt.

Here in NZ we are spoilt. There are at least 3 vendors who make flywheels, complete bellhousings or adapters and pricewise they are pretty good. Adaptors or housings are available for all the W and R series 2wd and 4wd boxes here.

International shipping to you guys would be a bit of a killer though. Check out www.trademe.co.nz and search for lexus V8 and you will see a bunch of products available.

I would probably do a V6 conversion next time. The engine bay is a touch small for the V8 as it's a big motor physically.

Also, was there any trouble codes that came up when switching to the 5 speed? If so, what did you do to fix them?

Not really worth posting the costs as I am in New Zealand and you are in the US so the bits I used will have different prices to what you can source.

No trouble codes, the factory ecu was removed and replaced with one that can drive the 1UZ. It was already a 5 speed and I kept the factory gearbox.

alot of guys here in aus are getting the computers tricked into thinking that the manual box is still there (dont ask me how just how it was explained to me) and i have also heard of a few guys just tossing the standard computer and running MOTEC or AUTOTRONIC SM4 computers obviously alot more tuneable

Cebby has been working on his swap for like 4 years and its still not even in the truck.  His website is the www.uzswap.com site that I posted before.

If you want to go cheap the best way is to run the factory ecu and lexus tranny. You then need a 340f
tailhousing and marlin or inchworm adapter to gear driven case. You could also run a 340f from a T100
which has the passenger drop chain driven case. I would stay away from the 340h.

You can get complete kits from Oz to run w or r series manuals. There is also a manual from behind a
2uz land cruiser i think called the h155. This is supposed to bolt right up but is only available outside
the U S and would be  :twocents:.

I think that some people running manuals with factory ecu are jumping the neutral start switch.
I think this would allow the engine to run without codes but i don't know if it will use the right
fuel maps and advance timing like it should.

The lexus tranny has three speed sensors but i have read it only needs two to operate. I am going
to hook up all three just to be sure. Using either the lexus tranny or an a340f it will be a hassle to
get the sensors right but it should be cheap.

The lexus tranny also has 4 selnoids while i think an a340f has 3. From looking at the wiring diagrams
it looks like the ecu might check to see if they are all present. If so I think this would only trigger
the OD dash light and would not make the ecu run in open loop. If you were not using the lexus
gauges you would't have this light and would't know or care.

Once myself and some others have succesfully completed this swap it would be nice to make a thread
with the relevent information like Big Mike did for the 3rz.
