Anyone running a Warn 8274 on their First Gen truck?
« on: Apr 07, 2009, 07:46:35 PM »
I've got a possible trade pending to get a Warn 8274 winch.

Anyone got some pics of this beast mounted in front of their 79-83 trucks? I'm trying to get ideas on how I'd to it, since it will be a custom fab job.

Full front pic, and a side picture would be awesome.  :wink2:

I brought my 8472 winch in '86 from 4 Wheel Parts Wholesalers in Oakland.
I then drove to Smittybuilt in Pomona and had them make a custom two tube front bumper for me.
They laughted at me and thought it was way overkill for such a small truck.
It never left me stranded in over 30 plus trips up Surprise Canyon.

My bumper was way to wide and stuck way too far out.
I am sure there are old pics of my truck around.

Thanks for the reply! And thanks for the pointer about pictures. I looked in your Rig Gallery thread and found some on the first page: http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=46689.0

Sticking out too far is my biggest concern. Looks like I might have to notch the grill and sink the winch in a bit.

Here's a few pics of a first gen with a 8274.  I don't think you could tuck one in any closer than that.  With a little care, you could make something like this look okay.  My grill is notched to fit the ramsey and it looks pretty good IMO.

If you are going to cut your grill and push the winch, back close to the radiator to tuck it in you should put some kind of protection in front of the radiator. I made mine out of 1” x 1/8 flat-bar and some expanded metal. This way if the cable/rope is messed up on a pull your radiator is protected against damage, especially with cable... My winch sits about two inches off the radiator.
