Breakage.....

When is a part (axle, u-joint, gear) most likely to break....

Under constant stress (i.e. 1st-superlow-superlow) or

when something is unloaded/loaded   (spin / grab)

?


I think it's more likely under the load/unload situation  (spin / grab / breakage)...........

I'd say spin/grab situations.  Although if you bind something up in double low, it has a good chance of breakage too, whereas you would just stall out the motor if you were geared higher.

The load/unload scenarios are never good. There isnt any way around some of it though. I saw video of marlins truck creeping up a trail not long ago. You could see the drivetrain loading, and unloading as he moved along.  :eek:

It would depend on a few factors, for instance an open diff vehicle is less likely to break something even in a load and unload situation. I know from doing it locked and unlocked, I can attack a hill harder open it's the slippage that keeps from breaking something to where as if you had used a locker you have a less forgiving driveline.

as for birfs, 80% of the break's i've seen were from the tire being turned all the way left or right stuck on a rock..

Yup go full lock and break a birf and it's almost a given if you try to back up too.

Now here's a related thought.....

Would a line-lock on the brakes (or just the parking brake on the rear) help with the unload/load problem by preventing to some degree the unloading of a wheel?


A line-lock up front would also help with torque bias up front with a tru-trac because a constant load on the wheel.

i could see it helping to prevent snap unloading, but then you are dealing with having to use more power to get over the same obstacle and things of that nature...... power is transfered to a drag on something else....
