ok people I need suggestions and help
« on: Mar 18, 2008, 10:33:06 PM »
Ok I know I asked a few questions before but now is the time.
I have a 91 4runner 5 speed SR5 with a 3.0 in it.  I have been contemplating a swap but have been stuck on what engine.
here are MY options that I have come up with they are in no particular order.
Future plans are SAS this summer gears and 35's
What I honestly want to ask you people that have done swaps similar to these I am trying to judge what I am getting into price wise and about how long I am looking at.

Also how about some good sources for engines??

Requirements will be retain AC, Power Steering, if possible Cruise Control

1) 3rz or 2TR 2.7 I4  , I love this engine If I had a 22r this would be what would go in it no doubt.

2) another 3.0, easiest and probably cheapest. I may buy a 3.0 and rebuild it as well.

3) 4.3 Chevy, cheap to fix and get decent power. and I have heard not to bad of a swap.

4) 5VZ 3.4 swap. this one has good and bad, one of the bad is hole in the hood or 2 inch lift.  It's also physically huge in size.

Anyway people I would love to hear comments on what ever swap.

The SAS can be done as fast as a weekend if you have all the parts and proper tools, but most it takes a few weeks, but not over a month usually to complete. Stay away from trail-gear for the sas parts, marlin, all-pro, or sky-manufacturing are all good choices. Also plan for the costs of a front driveline. So in all prolly a little over $2000 for the SAS.

For the gears fun 4.88 if this is going to be a Daily Driver and you want to keep some fuel economy, if not run 5.29 gears in both. Really your choice on what is best.

I did a 4.3L swap and it was very easy and straight forward with the parts that I used. I did a little break down on price for you also.

Here is a little break down:

AA bellhousing for 4.3L/V8 conversion with all hardware-$455.40 new from AA
Centerforce clutch w/ pressure plate and flywheel for conversion-$306.75 for the two new from AA
Slave cylinder from a land cruiser-$69 new from AA

(P/N 716148) Pilot Bushing .670 ID X 1.090 OD $20.70
(P/N N1430) GM Flat Face Release Bearing $42.00
P/N 716179V) Modified GM Release Arm,  Toyota Truck V8 conversions (168 tooth flywheels) $75.90

Total:969.75

To install you will also need these:
Engine motor mounts from AA~$150 weld in
Engine wiring harness and comp-$350 from howell
And an engine~$250-A few thousand, 1991 and earlier are the easiest to work on with the TBI fuel injection, Type of injection and vortec heads come later on in years and also more power, but it will cost more

AA book says most people take about 60 work hours to complete the engine swap.

DO NOT swap in a 3.slow it is use less and you will blow head gaskets and everything you can think of.
A 3rz will cost you a lot for the engine $5,000 plus, then you will need the bellhousing, wiring, etc. too
Same as above for the 5vz way more $$$$$$

Hope that helps you out

Chev 4.3 swap sounds like a good one..only i'm not sure on the mileage of em, but they are power plentiful, and fairly cheap to wrench on.
By the time I get the money for an SAS I'll be 65 at this rate!

coloradotoy thanks for that info I have a question for you did you use a W or R series trans. I would like to swap to a W56 with gear case. I will check with AA and see which ones they have if they make both I will probably just hunt a W56 down and go that way.
Everyone keeps telling me to go 3.4 but that is a huge freakin engine, but apparently it bolts in and you have to mess with wiring and the exhaust cross over. I like the 3rz its impressive but I havent found a complete pullout for under 2k dollars yet.

The 4.3 and the 3rz have always been the highest on the list. I knew the 4.3 was the cheapest just by engine price. But yes they are easy to come by, easy to find parts, and power wise stock ones are 165-205hp depending on the model.
Has anyone kept AC with a 4.3 swap I know there is a way it can be done.

and yes I know about what the SAS will cost I have been looking at parts on that, I have SAS'd a Blazer before it should be about the same headache I figure. But that will be done after the engine. I need an engine as I have been running on 5 cylinders for about 25-30k miles. Truck actually still is reliable as it gets, but way under powered. We are 99% sure its a burnt exhaust valve on #6.

I like option #1.  It gets good gas mileage and with roughly 160HP and less weight than the other options, you're also less top-heavy.

There are also plenty of cheap parts for the 2.7.  I'd go with something newer of course - like a used engine from Japan with only a couple of years on it.

With the price of gas these days I'd go 3rz.
22RE .30 over, mild cam, K&N, LCE header, 2.25'' pipe, high flow cat, Magnaflow.
 Marlin 1200LB clutch

 no substitute for 4wheel drive.

is it a dd or trailer queen? if you dont use it other than to hit the trail i say 3.4 but if its a dd i say 3rz. People really dont worry about gas mileage on the trail lol

this is a DD if i didnt worry about gas or if it was a trail rig I would cut it up and put a SBC in it.
My top 2 choices are 3rz and 4.3 which is about the way this post is going.

A modern 2.7 may BE a 4 cylinder engine, but it's nothing like that nearly 20 year old V6 you're used to.  Shoot, that 3.NO isn't probably making much over 100HP by now.

I used a W56 behind it and with the 37's i have i got about 14-16 mpg per a tank. AA makes a adapter for both R series, and then the one for G and W series transmissions. Since doing the original swap though i have gone another route, I have the W conversion bell housing, clutch, flywheel and many other parts and also a W56 if you are interested i would be selling them much cheaper than new from AA. Prolly around $600 or so.

If you get the Toyota conversion and low gearing hand book from AA in the back at least the one i had there is some Information on plumbing the stock AC into a chevy AC pump, then you would have to guess on the right lbs of R-134 to fill the system

Mr_Will, PM received and I will compile a really good list for you of prices and parts new and from me, also everything else you would need for the swap. If i get the chance i will also take some pictures of the parts and give you a call sometime this week. Give me times that you are available on the phone.

ok I think i was confused. If you guys could clarify something. I am not a Toyota person. I know GM, Honda and RX7's.
I was under the impression the w56 is the stronger trans, but was told the R series is stronger. I guess I had it backwards. So would it be best to use my R150 out of my truck instead of a w56, and just switch to a R151 later on I guess.
all these numbers will give you a headache thats for sure.

r150 and r151 and r154 are all v6 23 spline output transmissions, and the tcase that you would put behind them would be a 23 spline unit. I used the W56 behind mine for 6 years never had a single issue or break ever.

clutch has about 20,000 on it and the trans has no leaks shifted well when i took it out and i do not have a tcase, that would still be in the truck
