Engine Swap S2000 into 87 Runner
« on: Feb 25, 2008, 06:11:10 PM »
I'm back and starting a new project.

Here is where you guys come in. I found a wrecked honda S2000 and I want to put that engine in the 87 turbo Runner with a blown motor that I picked up the other day. I have the means to build a one off adapter to get the Toyota bell housing to the Vtec but the spline, lents, wire harness, issues is where the void is that I need to fill. I'm thinking if a  Toyota clutch will fit in the Vtec pressure plate that would solve the spline problem. the depth could be corrected by the adapter. It would be a sick setup! 240hp @ 8500 rpms and a rev limiter at 9200 rpms with very good off idle tork due to the variable cam timing. does anyone have any input on this idea?? Has this been done before??
My last crawler project was an 86 pickup. Love it, but I the two negatives are can't haul but one person and it is low on power. When I built it I spared no expense and got a DOA long block that  DOA says is 150 155 hp.    Maybe, but 240 would be better and I payed more for the doa motor than I can get this S2000 for. I've heard more horror stories about 22ret's than I care to get into. Any input would be GREAT~

I have nothing to offer as far as the swap. But I take it you are building it for high speed and not rock crawling?

Hello, Well I plan on building it just like the last crawler I built a couple years ago.  It's in the Rig gallery ( here_  http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=12459.0  )  Like I said, I love my pickup I just wish it had more power and could haul more people. I have driven a Honda S2000 and the power band is incredible and the off idle tork will sit on my 22re It is an amazing engine! I think it would make an awesome crawler. thanks for the input:)

Do it. Dual ultimate will solve the lack of torque. And it would sound so sick...

If Horsepower = Torque * RPM / 5252

Then Torque = Horsepower * 5252 / RPM'

So if the S2000 has 240 hp @ 8,500 RPM it is making 148 lb-ft of torque.

By the math to maintain 148 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 RPM you would need about 120 hp ignoring VVT.  The rule-of-thumb is twice the HP to maintain equal torque at twice the RPM.

It might run a little stronger than a 22RE, but I would expect serious gearing issues (you may never get out of 3rd gear) and the 4Runner would greatly outweigh the S2000 taking away a bunch of the low end spunk.

I know nothing of this swap but a buddy posted these pics on another forum.  From the addy on them I suggest checking streetsourcemag.com for info.

IMO, its too much of a high reving motor for a rock crawler trail rig. I know my 7MGE in my 4runner was a dog off the line and super easy to kill crawling! Its just didn't have the low end torque. would be fun for a driver, but not a trail rig in my opinoin.

That's very good information! Thankyou. I like a scientific approach to stuff.  All I really have to go on is my experience in the rock crawling that I have done so far. In serious situations in rocks 99% of the time I'm in first, 2.28, 4.7, idling at about 700 rpms just crawling. I would think at that point you wouldn't be able to tell what engine is under the hood. It never seems to load the engine enough to suggest lots of tork is required.   When I get to a place where I need to get a run at something is where I think the Honda would shine. A hill climb by my house is a perfect example. If I hit it in 2.28 second gear at 4000 to 4500rpms I run out of power and need to shift and I lose more speed and generally don't make it. If i hit it in first pinned to the moon at 5500 maybe even 6000 it's too slow in the lower section of the hill to carry me though to the top but I generally make it farther than I do when I try it in second gear. Now if I were to hit in in first at 9,000 rpms I would be going as fast or faster than I would in second gear with the 22re and not have to shift. I would imagine It would make it farther than the 22re. I know this is a far fetched project but I like doing things different and not having same stuff as everyone else. If you guys poopoo the vtech idea enough I will have to agree with you and give up on it. :( Another Idea was while on JDM web site I saw a couple Acura NSX engines. Getting too extreme now in the $ department but still something to day dream about. :) I still want as much input as I can get for this project though. It would be a fun project and then we would know for sure how it might work. If any one has any information on how to take on wiring issues mating the Toyota to the Honda engine I would love to have it!! :)    Thankyou    Rock on!
