Question on a turbo 4runner
« on: Jul 20, 2007, 11:42:55 AM »
I can get a slightly used turbo 4runner for a few hundred bucks out here in CT.  I am just wondering if it is worth it to spend the money on it.  I still have to take a good look at it to make sure everything is on the up and up, but i know the motor has 170k+ on it, so i am sure a rebuild would be needed.  I have a good 22R in my runner (ha good, it only has 110k on it), that i was going to change to fuel injection, so maybe throw the turbo on as well.  Will it be worth it?

Also, the turbo 4runner is the auto tranny, and i dont want the auto.  I just finished the marlin dual case adapter in my 84 (so my front reduction box is a front shift, and the rear is the top shift), so what would i need to use the turbo tcase (for the 23 spline shaft) as the rear most t-case in setup i have now (which is the 21 spline rear case).  The rear most case is where i woudl want the 23 spline shaft, right?

The other thing is my body is beat on the 84 (been rolled, and had to chop the top, and weld a new on on), so if this body and frame is in better shape, i may just move my lift over to this truck.

So, i really dont know what i am going to do.  Just looking for some input from anyone who runs a turbo one, to see if it is worth it.

Cheers
Jay

well i dont run a turbo but from what i've heard its worth it. you would want the 23 spline in the rear case. if the input of the turbo t-case is a 21 spline, like your 22R's t-case, then it will bolt right up. i've never heard of a 23 spline input shaft in a t-case so that shouldnt be a problem. go for it

i have an R-151 tranny (turbo) the input is 23 spline my dual case setup is for a 23 spline. you will have to buy the piece that installs in the adaptor that makes it 23 spline. (mine is 23 spline at the tranny and at the adaptor) when i bought my adaptor i purchased a second 23 spline input shaft from Marlin and used my original in the front case and the full spline shaft from Marlin in the rear case. I hope this helps.
