Help with steering on FJ40
« on: Jul 02, 2004, 08:36:44 PM »
I bent my relay rod recently, it was arched up almost 12 inches.  It caused my front tires to get a herendous speed wobble at 10mph and above.  I limped it back to camp and trailered it home.  I just got a new relay rod and have replaced the old bent up rod and the wobbles are still there.  Any suggestions on what might cause this??

What are you calling the relay rod?  The steering rod from the steering box forward, or the drag link that goes from the tierod to the top?
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

It is the smaller rod that goes from the steering box to the passenger side tie rod end.

So you've got aftermarket steering then.  Stock the steering box sat behind the driver front tire.  From the sound of it yours is in front of the axle.  If that is the case and you bent the draglink that connects the box to the tierod that should have no effect on your alignment.  If you bent the draglink as bad as it sounds then you probobly bent the tierod and that is waht is causeing your death wobble.
