This may be the one that takes out SBNF here are some quotes from one of my club members as to what is happening....

Quote
It does not look good for the area due to the Butler Fire!

An LA Times story with pictues is here
http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/california/la-me-bearfire16sep16,1,457962.story?coll=la-headlines-pe-california

The fire is moving in 2 different directions from the Butler Peak area. Green Valley Lake as well as Fawnskin and even southern Lucerne Valley have been evacuated. Hanna Flat campground has been evacuated.

This fire could potentially take out Holcolm Creek AND John Bull.

So sad! This area has awesome stands of very old trees, some of the best in the SBNF.

I tried to get onto the incident website but it won't load, probably too much traffic. http://www.inciweb.org/state/5/

Here is a picture of Butler Peak from the LA Times article. You can see the lookout to the right of center.

Vince had mentioned to me that the Spinnin Fours were planning a Big Bear run next weekend.  Looks like you'll need to find somewhere else to go.

Latest update I read reported that Hanna Flat campground is destroyed and it threatening to head toward Fawnskin.

Yep, this is really grim to be certain. Myself being a member of Sons of Thunder 4wheelers club, this is a trail we've co-adapted with the Riverside Rough Riders and it does sicken me.

You might check out a site  bensweather.com and go to radio staion window and hit local news for photos and latest update.

The smoke plume from the fire has been visable from valley all weekend.  :sad2: Also the tanker planes have been going nonstop out of Norton from sunup to sundown.  :usa: to the people battling the blaze.

Yes they were and the plan was to have stayed in Hanna Flats, won't be anything there now.

There is a nice topo map here:

http://socalmountains.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?29785.0

You can see that all but the very west end of Holcomb Creek trail is in the burn area.

Donald,
Does it look like Dishpan/Deep Creek will be spared?  :dunno: As you know, the 2003 "Old Fire" resulted in the closure of a lot of the trails for a couple of years. It looks like all of the good Big Bear trails (Holcomb, John Bull, Gold Mtn etc) will be lost. :rivers: :rivers: :rivers:

Edit:

After looking at the topo map, maybe the fire heads north and burns itself out going down the mountain into the desert?  :crossed: Maybe some of the trails on the east end of the lake will be spared. :crossed:

John Bull and Gold Mtn are still looking OK, they are more towards the east side of the lake, east of Holcomb Valley (which can be seen on the map I linked)
Dishpan is also still looking OK as it is further west, past the crab flats campground (which can be seen on the very west side of the map I linked, "crab" is cut off)

Any off highway access between the two areas will probably be closed for quite a while so If you want to run them both you'll have to take the hwy between Polique Cyn in BB over to 3N16 off Green Valley Lake Rd.  And of course, the fire isn't out yet.  If it takes a turn to the east it will head toward Holcomb Valley (John Bull) and some nice historical sites as well.

FYI, per the scanner reports there was just a fixes wing tanker that lost an engine and "crash" landed in Big Bear behind the Vons.  Reports are that the Pilot is OK and walking around, but almost all of the air attack has been grounded due to the accident.

:shudder: Bad news.  :sad2:  I sure hope the pilot is ok. The Vons is on the east end of the lake near Fox Farms and near the little airport. I don't think that runway would be long enough for one of the tankers. The tankers fly out of the former Norton AFB. I have a friend of a friend who knows one of the pilots. Apparently they are a great group who certainly risk their lives to help others. :usa:

"Tanker" may not have been the best term.  It was a small single engine, single seat plane kinda like a crop duster.  Pilot is OK, but aircraft were grounded from the fire for about an hour.

There will be a whole bunch of :yikes: :yikes: :help: :help: :willynilly: :willynilly: :sheerterror: :scared: :shudder: :sad2: :rivers: :rivers: :rivers:  ...but I.m a commited trail supporter and though I dont know what the final result will be after winter, acknowledging erosion and what I would like to see this trail as a perrennial trail on forestry maps as it has been...
