Engine sound during start - normal??
« on: Feb 03, 2008, 10:15:12 AM »
Hello maybe someone can assist?
I have a 1984 4X4 pickup 22R.  When I first start the vehicle, the engine has an odd sound for about 5 seconds until the engine oil begins to flow.  It's not the timing chain, as it is relatively new. Is this normal?

I'm sure the vehicle needs a refurbished top end.  Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Ernest

Sorry but we need more to go on than just an odd sound.  Can you try to explain?

The engine becomes more quite as the oil begins to flow, approx 4 seconds after starting.  I'm sure the engine needs a new top end.  But, I was trying to avoid a full engine rebuild if possible.

It would be my gut feeling that this is normal, that the engine would become quite as the oil begins to flow. I also have a 1980 and 81 4X4's and the sound difference is not as noticeable, during start?

the sound would be a mechanical sound, engine noise, lack of oil.

maybe, oil pressure is slow to build?  because of worn head? and valve train?

Is it a tapping or ticking sound, or maybe a knocking sound?

its hard to tell over the internet, but from what you are describing i would say it is normal....

the 22r engines use something called a skirtless piston or something liek that, and they make noise until everything gets lubricated

He needs to make sure he's using the oil filters with the check valve in it so the so the timing chain tensioner doesn't back off.

My 80 and 81 don't make noise on startup, but my 91 always has :dunno:  Only lasts a few seconds so I don't worry about it too much, but I chalk it up to an oil pressure, no oil up top yet thing.

Thanks for the brainstorming!  I think, I know what the problem is.  The engine has ran hot a few times.  Because of this.  The head has warped a bit, making the cam not sit on head properly, loosing resistance from oil lubricator spouts.

Because of loss of oil resistance on cam, therefore it takes a bit longer to build oil pressure, for silencing engine noise.

Thanks again.

...I would not worry about it, unless it begins to burn oil.  Burning oil would be a sign of engine wear.  if it quits immediately, or few seconds later.  I don't think it really matters much.
Does it run Hot? or has ran Hot?  that would cause the head to worp, changing oil pressure.
If it has'nt ran Hot, I would just let it be.

where do you get an oil filter with a checkvalve?  i've always used a fram.  never had any problems, but i like the checkvalve idea

FRAM :yikes: :bolt: NAPA Gold filters are always good, and have a checkvalve. Plus they are not real expensive. I think they are relabeled WIX filters. Goood stuff!

where do you get an oil filter with a checkvalve?

  In a box labelled 90915-YZZG1.  $3.99 each + shipping from me, or reasonably cheap through your local dealer.

my truck makes a clackety sound from the front  for about 2 seconds and then goes away. i'm pretty sure the TC tensioner just tightening up. the idiot PO put in plastic guides when he replaced them. so i'll have to do it later.
lets not and say we did.
