Lift Limit
« on: May 18, 2007, 06:01:52 PM »
Okay here's the deal, I picked up a cheap 1980 Yoda 4x4 today from a guy at work. My want is to make it run the 4 cylinder stock class at local mud bog events ( ie: I can't swap in a v8, or chevy axles, etc. )

My plan is to add some 7" front leafs, 6" rear leafs, 2" shackles all around, 1 1/2" wheel spacers, lockers and a gear swap. My question is; I know 7"+ of front lift will require lengthening of drive line, anyone know the limit for the rear without making the angles far too obtuse? Skyjacker 7" leafs suck  :shhh: but they are the biggest I can find off the shelf, anyone had problems or issues installing? My goal is to squeeze the 39.5x18x16.5 boggers in there and fling some mud before I break an axle shaft or two  :beerchug:
81' 4x4 short box 32/36 weber, 3" procomp, 33" bgf all-terrain, magnaflow, aussie lockers

02' Cummins quad cab, edge w/ attitude, 5" straight pipe, FASS system, 5.5" lift w/ 35" toyo MT's

93' Cummins single cab, 80hp injectors, 50hp fuel pin, aFe intake, 5" straight stacks, 8" lift w/ 37" toyo MT's,

i have 5" lift and have 39 iroks on my 83.  you don't need that much lift.  if you are mud boggin it you won't need it to make alot of flex.  the width of the tires might be an issue with them hitting your leaf springs when turning.  i have 13.5 wide tires with 2" wheels spacers and they hit  plus you need to think about how heavy those tires are gonna be.  you might have better luck with smaller tires because you can get them moving faster.  just my  :twocents:

You're not going to get far on 39" tires with stock toyota axles. You need some Bobby Longs and more power to spin those.

Unfortunatly I'm well aware of my 4cylinder power and toothpick axles while runnin 39" boggers  :eyebrow: I just want to have the lift available to throw these on if I do indeed feel like being an idiot. I've got some 33" boggers that I can play with if I feel like being sane  :willynilly:

a buddy used too have a 7 inch skyjacker on his 83 with stock shackles in the rear the springs would flip the shackles forward and make it ride like a log wagon but after he put 2 inch lift shackles on it helped alot, i dont think the driveshaft was at a major angle but it was pretty bad thow might have too shim it some. i think he had 7 inch skyjacker springs 2 inch shackles and 3 inch body and it cleared 38's easy prob could have even flexed 44's a lil but the dang thing was so stiff it couldent  flex a speedbump without lifting a tire till it got broke in and settled, those springs settle bad!!!!!! prob lost about 4 inches of lift after the got broke in.
good luck with it and i think stock bifs would hold up too a stock engine and just mud but ur prob only gonna get 1st maby 2nd in low only with 5.29s but if ur staying stock axels might as well go with 5.71's too be just as weak there and the stock bifs least then u might and i mean might pull 1st and high with a healthy motor. but this is just my 2 cents
wish i still had the pics of his truck when it was together, its long been bashed and smashed and gone sence then.

good luck
adam
If you didn't make it, and it ain't broke, you didn't try hard enough.
