3,4,5pt Harness? What to get?
« on: May 22, 2007, 06:01:08 PM »
Help a newb out here!!

I know nothing about 3,4 or 5 point harness's and i'm looking to purchase a pair for the truck for safety.

So what should I get?  What would you recommend?

I guess 3,4, or 5 point is all personal preference. I want something that I can get in and out of quickly.

I see buckle style and cam lock style, I'm assuming that with a cam lock you just hit the button and everything release's?

What brands should I be looking at?   I'm on ebay right now and they've got everything from $375 down to $20 a pair.

I'd imagine the $20 special is junk so I want to get something thats going to be good quality, last a long time and most importantly keep me in the seat when the truck rolls!

Please guide me    :)

Get the crowe enterprises 5 point harness. My brother has that in his Jeep with his mastercraft seats and he has 4 of the 5 (doesnt have the submarine strap, the one that goes between the legs) and they are awesome. Ill go snap some pics... I believe they are like 75-100 a piece and they are good quality. I also believe they are 3" wide versions.

This is what i'm looking at thus far

Corbeau 3 point

http://www.central4wd.com/inventorydetail.aspx?page=id%7C12802

Here's an R.J.S 3 point cam lock

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/R-J-S-Roll-Bar-Mount-3-5-Point-Camlock-Harness_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33725QQihZ016QQitemZ260120647024QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

This looks like a good deal for a 5 point Simpson, says no mounting hardware but what's that.. a few 1/2 bolts?!

Let me know what you think, thanks.

Ah, thanks LB  I will do some reasearch on the crowe's

5 point is best retention......

if you want to look at best strapping points, look into a childs car seat, they are usually a variation of a 5 pt harness

cam is the hit the button and release..... buckles arent bad though.. a friend had 4 points in his yota, when i rode with him, it was comfortable, jsut more work than a stock seatbelt... but either is going to be like that....

i would get the cam, i jsut htink they are cooler... 5 point is best, as the crotch strap keeps you fromt sliding out under the seat

oh yeah, keep in mind, that the belts are only good for a couple years... and seatbelts are disposable, if you get into a fender bender, its supposed to be replaced...

stock seatbelts are supposed to be good for 2 accidents, however... 1 accidnet can exceed that jsut because the way it happens, like if you got rear ended then hit the car in front of you, thats already 2 accidnets on that belt

santioning bodies liek nascar and nhra require replacement after a certain amount of time

this is a trail only truck so if I get hit in the rear end its typically from some jackass not putting his rig in gear... lol... its happened.

Nah my only concern is from rolling/flopping on the trail, nothing more.

Thanks for the info and quick responce!

are these mounted to the floor in all 4 spots?

Did he have to crossbrace any mounting points or weld flat bar?  or just mounted directly to the cab?

Oh yeah and theyre good for pretty much any person. What I mean by that is even though they are adjustable, nothing hits you in the shoulders ore anything  uncomfortable like that. My brother is a bigger guy and im a small guy and on both of us theyre still comfy.

Its mounted in 3 spots for how my brother has them. He went and got some 9/16 (I believe) Grade 8 bolts and drilled 1 hole behind the seat and put both straps going up and over through that one hole and he mouned each side on each side of the seat also with grade 8 bolts.

I vote the 4 point then you have support from both sides, but a five pt is a bit overkill.  I have also heard from many that use them that the croch strap is a pain and gets old.  Just my 2 cents

with an adult i dont think a 5 is going to be that big a deal, most people wont slide out from under the seatbelt.....

now if it was my kids rifding, they are getting the most protection i could get on them, their feet cant reach the floor nor would they have the strength or instinct to hold on for dear life like an adult (not saying none do, but most -- there are some kids that are smarter than their parents too, lol)

like captain was saying nascar and nhra require new belts every so often that you might be able to find some used ones of ebay that are still in new condition

I bought mine from E-Bay for $20. each. They were brand new overstock that exceeded the expire date for certain race circuits. I have no sanctioning body that governs their use in my Yota so I plan on using them with thourough visual inspections often until I see unsafe wear or weak points. Then I will buy another pair of outdated stock.

I am running RCI 5-point for $69.88 from Summit.     I think that the crotch belt keeps the seatbelts in place and shoulder straps/buckle from riding up.

It's important to remember do not use 4-5 point harnesses in anything that does not have a cage or a roll bar. Your head will have the roof tin formed around it making for a nice cab full of pasta sauce and grey matter should the truck roll over.
