is the 83 4x4 5-speed an L52?
would this work in a 85 22re? or should i try and find a w56?

if it a stock tranny it should be a L52. you could use the L52 in the 85 but it will be shorter. the W56 does seem to be a stronger tranny, you can get a reuilt one for $845 or upgrade to a HD tranny for $895.
