Questions about Moab and lockers
« on: Mar 02, 2007, 07:48:07 AM »
I ordered 2 aussie lockers a month ago.  They are on backorder and they said they were getting a shipment in now.  Well, I guess I'm not on the list to recieve any lockers from this shipment so they are backordered until May  :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum:    :maddest: :maddest: :maddest: :maddest: :( :( :( :shake: :shake: :shake: :shakehead: :shakehead: :shakehead:

I am headed to Moab at the end of March for a full week of 4wheeling.  I have a dual ultimate crawler installed in my 4Runner so keep that in mind as well as a 4 inch lift.  My question is this:  would I be OK with welding up a rear 3rd member and leaving the front open?  I am going with a group of Jeeps that are all locked front and rear and we plan on taking the tough lines on the tough trails like Prichett canyon.

Or should I buy a lockright and install it in the front and use it for the Moab trip and then turn around and sell it after my aussies get delivered?  I really want to run with the big boys on the tough lines rather than having to take the bypasses and get strapped up some of the tougher stuff.

I have three weeks before the trip!

You might not even get them in May depending on how many people have ordered them over the last several months.

Moab is such a blast.  I've been there twice to Mtn. Bike but this will be my first trip to 4wheel.  I can't wait!

i say don't go Aussie period. but just weld it front and rear until you get them. Ur steering will suck but you will have a better chance at making it up every thing you point it at.

if you could use lockers where you normally wheel, you will want them in moab.  pritchett was previously rated a 5 on the 1-5 scale.  It is now rated an 8 on the new 1-10 scale...I would assume that with places like area bfe, pritchett is no longer in the same league as the hardest trails even though it washes out and generally gets harder.

Pritchett is the only rated trail I have heard of that has been oficially rated a 5 (I'm sure there are others).  We had an ifs toy open on 33s follow us in.  he was a way good driver, but I never saw him come out...  I would say the majority of people locked front and rear take winch or strap a couple of times even if they take the "bypasses"  you usually see carnage on that trail.  It is my favorite trail so far.  I will be doing it again this year and some of the trails that are even more challenging.  I finally went to the hammers and I think pritchett has more difficult obstacles than wrecking ball, though body damage is not as severe...

Moab is like most places.  easy stuff and hard stuff.

I would get your lockers one way or another...

here is a pic of a line we took when there was a rubicon broke on a "bypass"  and a buggie broke on the obstacle...

Because of the type of rock and trails you mostly incounter out there I would not weld the front. Being locked in the rear will get you around fine. The rock is really grippy in Moab and you'll be climbing slabs out there that you wouldn't be able to climb on cali granite.

If you don't get them in time I'd weld the rear and leave the front open you'll have no trouble with that setup except in the most extreme, remember you are driving a Toyota.

Pritchett really isn't that hard. Remember that the 1-5 rating is\was for offical EJS trails only.  Meaning that pritchett was the most difficult of the offical organized trails.
You have a Jeep?  That's cute.... So does Barbi.

that must have been me following you in the ifs toyota the orange one if you remember it was welded in the rear but ya we had to turn around when we got to broken buggie and the rubicon that for some reason somebody had a bright idea of hooking the winch up to the steering to pull it up the bybass so ya we turned around there

I got my aussies in this week so they will be installed this weekend.  I will be locked front and rear with a dual ultimate.  I should be able to take almost any line I want   The 33's will be my limiting factor  :therethere:  They are only on there until I can afford some 36" Iroks!
