3RZ swap starting soon
« on: Feb 13, 2007, 06:19:50 AM »

I picked up a complete 2000 standard cab, automatic, prerunner non TRD Tacoma with the 3RZ yesterday. I am going to swap it into my 85 4runner that has 2 big holes in the 22re block. I was thinking of using the whole harness and just rewiring my entire truck with it, extending wires where necessary and eliminating for what I dont have. It seems it would be a good way to update a 22 year old wire harness with something much better. I would like to use everything from the AC to the cluster anyhow, so it makes more sense to me. Any opinions on stuff I am not thinking of would be appreciated.

I've been in the middle of this same swap for over a year now - Not cause it should take that long, but mainly cause I don't have much time.

You will need:

a bellhousing /clutch/flywheel/clutch fork/ clutch bearings off a manual trans 3rz.

custom made motor mounts ( I just re-used my 22re motor mounts and hacked them up a bit)

T100 oil pan/pick up tube/ dipstick and dipstick tube

manual trans 2rz or 3rz wirring harness and matching ecu that will work on your version of your 3rz (there are 3 different versions)

re-use you're old 22re a/c compressor and get a Mr2 turbo (I think?) magnetic clutch.

a FACTORY manual for your '85 and a FACTORY manual for whatever year motor harness you get .

Pigtail harness part that comes off the ecu for the dash stuff.

If your in Cali, your definately gonna need a charcoal canister hooked up to that engine harness.

Thanks for the list. Will the auto harness not work with the manual computer? I am hoping to use as much of the Taco AC stuff as possible, since mine did not work very well to start with. I will see how far that goes....

It may, it may not - but one things for sure, it will be a lot easier just swapping a manual trans harness onto it.  I had to so I could use a charcoal canister from a 2001 2rz.  The motor is a 2004 3rz prerunner style in mine.
