upgrading for longs
« on: Feb 03, 2007, 07:30:15 PM »
I am soon to be buying a set of 30 spline longs with chromo hub gears. I want to know what is the next weak link in the chain. I have been considering addind more dowl pins to the hubs, or mabye just buying fror hub stud kit. If you could what single up grade would do along with 30 spline longs? :headscratch:

hub studs are the next weakest link.....FROR sells ARP hub studs.....after that you'll be breaking knuckles me thinks

why  after longs, studs, and hub gears? is the d60 not as strong as a toy axle?

ARP studs are definitely stronger than stock. With Chromo lock outs or Chromo gears people are still braking the ARP studs. Do the pins and studs. Or go 60.

This is the best thing to do in my opinion. I would think it would be better than the ARP studs. This what I was gonna do before I got a chubby for Dana 60s. He installs 5/16s studs and 6 dowels.

I think I may do that myself if I can sneak that stuf into work to use their drill press. I just need to make a jig to get everything lined up perfect. The tolerances on the hubs, should they be a little looser in order to get the hub on/off easier. Mabye by the time I need to remove them I could afford one of those nice little pullers.

This what I was gonna do before I got a chubby for Dana 60s.

I could get a 60 for a little more than the longs and knuckle rebuild kits. But man to set the 60 up for my toy would cost a fortune. The extra with on the axles sucks too. The best part is after I upgrade to longs the clearance over a 60 and I will be just as strong. :woohoo:

I'm pretty sure. You have the option of up to 7.17 axles gears too.

I thougt to be able to go that low you have to run a dana 70. I'm pretty shure that 60s don't go as low. I'm also think that a dana 60 is 91/4 ring gear and you have to upgrade to get 35 spline shafts. :dunno:

Gears are available that low for the 60. I think you may be right about 9.25 :headscratch: I dunno either way it is more than enough. 35 spline shafts are a good idea but not mandatory. You will probably break an outer shaft if you don't upgrade though.

Pretty sure 60s have 9.75" ring gear.
D70: 10.25"
9": 9.0" (duh)
D44: 8.5"

The weak link in a Toy 8" is the R&P....no matter what upgrades you do to the axle. Thats not saying they arent holding up to 38"+ tires with Longfields...etc

30 spline Longs, Chromo Hub gears and studs with Cryo'ed R&P is your best bet...and most people will never break that.
