Re-gearing is grrrrrrrreat!!
« on: Apr 19, 2008, 11:16:59 PM »
So me any my pop spent all day today re-gearing my truck. It's an 81 that went from 3:90s to 4.88s. All I can say is this is probably one of the best investments I've made in a long time. It accelerates better (no riding the clutch to get it to move), it has more pep, and I can actually use 5th gear now. Just thought I'd share my experience today with the group. It's healthy, you know.

Regearing is a blessing, especially for the 4 bangers! :driving: What are your plans for this truck?

Well, nothing crazy, really. I'll probably never do dual cases, big lift, or anything like that. Probably try for hy-steer, maybe 2-3" of lift, and maybe some 33's (it's got 31's on it now). I actually just put on a weber 32-36 on it today, so it runs like it should, so it should be good for awhile. Maybe after I get some more $$$ I wanna try to put a chevy 5.3l in it. We'll see...

Yeah it and my Tacoma comprise my DD's. My taco is a 97 2wd mini with a turbo 2rz pushing about 290 hp and 320 tq. It is a blast to drive but has an expensive taste for premium, so it's nice to be able to put the cheap stuff in the 81 and just drive.

Thats great, but just as an FYI if you do go with a chevy small block or anything like that, you will be overgeared for the 33s.

I was amazed the difference when I went from my stock gears and 33's to 5.29s and 37's.

Yeah I'm on CT. That's where I get info for the taco (and brag about it ). I figure if it can't go off road, it might as well haul ass! I come here (and TTORA and Pirate and Dezertrangers, but mostly here) for info on ol' blue.

This is the thread I needed to see. I am in the process of getting a set of 4.88's for my truck this week. And this is motivation to get off my butt and purchase them. Thanks!

I ordered mine through Randy's Ring and Pinion, cause they have really good customer service. They aren't the cheapest, but I think customer service is worth a butt load.
