gear whine in 3rd and 5th
« on: Jan 12, 2007, 01:28:36 PM »
hey guys, got a 87 4Runner recently and ive noticed that while under a load (any load) 3rd and 5th gear has a gear whine to it. it shifts fine into both gears but they are just noisy. it would almost sound like the tranny or T-case is low on oil but ive checked em and the oil is right at the level. not sure at this point what else it could be but am debating dumping the oil and running some royal purple in it to see if it'll quite them down any.

what do you guys think it could be? i think ill take some audio or video footage and show you guys whats goin on to get a better idea. thanks.

I'd lean toward a bad bearing, but that's only a guess.  Atleast now somebody posted :gap:

I thought the tranny was bad in mine when I bought it cause it whined, but then I found the hole in the rear end and missing pinion teeth :yikes:  Noise went away when I replaced the third.
