top shift or forward shift ???

whats a better set up to have and why ?

As for the early ones they are the same inside.  You want the early ones as they are gear drive.  Later ones are chain drive.  To do a dual case setup you need a top shift for the rear one I think. Look here, Marlin sells the conversion kit and there are instructions there too.

I run a forward shift on the crawler box and a top shift on the rear case.

If you have a bench seat, there will be more room to shift with a forward shifting t-case.
In most cases, You will need to match the t-case to your transmission.

All dual case setups require a top shifting rear t-case.

how can I tell the difference between a top shift t case and a foreward shifting one I have 2 cases here to do my duals with just need to know what one goes where

a forward shift looks like the pic. the shift rails stick out of the front of the reduction husing

top shifting Transmission W56 A and B, and the R150F A, B, and C
 
froward shifting Transmission the G series, w56 C and D, w59 and the R151F
