Reading Torque Specs Please Help
« on: Jun 13, 2006, 05:16:23 AM »
Good Morning,

I'm using a torque wrench for the first time, for the install of a 20R Head on a block.  See specs below, reads: 53-63 lbs.  Does that mean final torque should be between 53-63 lbs?

or second to last sequence, Torque to 53 lbs and final sequence torque 63 lbs.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

...thank's for the info.

i am planning to torque in three passes: first 43lbs, second 53lbs and final 63 lbs.

would this be a good plan? or should it be something else: 40, 50, 60lbs.

someone that done this before with good results?

thanks in advance,
ernest

I go 20 for the first pass, 40 for second pass and 60 for the last. Best to do it in increment's.

Yes, the final torque is ok if between 53 to 63 ft-lbs. Follow yotaweelr's advice and you'll be set

Since you're new to torque wrenches make sure you differentiate between inch-pounds and foot-pounds.  They are much different and if you confuse them bad things will happen.

i usually do a first pass around 20 on the head bolts to make sure they're all seated, then 40lbs then final torque.  make sure you go nice and slow and smooth -- if you jerk the wrench, it'll pop earlier and give you a false torque reading.

after i torque the head bolts i assemble some other stuff, then give them one last check with the torque wrench just before i dump the oil over the rockers and button it up.

Also, the torque wrench is only accurate when your hand is on the Handle. If you try pulling on the wrench somewhere like in the middle of its shaft, then it will torque higher than what you set it at. It is important to apply the force only to the handle. If its has a black grip or rough metal surface at the end of the wrench, then only put your hand there to pull or push the wrench.

Also, I always let it click 2 or 3 times just to make sure it is correct. I will apply force to the wrench until it clicks, then I will let up, then apply force again, let it click, etc. Sometimes you might be pulling/pushing it kinda sideways or there may be debris in the threads of the bolt, so I like to double or triple check that the wrench is clicking at the same place.
