Newb Question. AGAIN!!!
« on: Mar 08, 2006, 07:38:45 PM »
So I followed the suggestions and got myself some lock ring pliers. After that, the hubs went on like cake. But another newb question from me.

The drivers side was up in the air being worked on and the passenger side tire was on and touching the ground. With the drivers side hub LOCKED the front driveshaft DID turn. When it is unlocked, it DID NOT turn. That's not my question.

When the passenger side was up in the air and the drivers side was touching the ground, when it was LOCKED, the driveshaft DID NOT turn. Is that because it is an open diff? I took it partly apart because I thought I put it back together wrong. And it still isn't completely together.

Please help me ease my nerves and tell me I did it right.

Did I put it back together properly?

Yes.

Thanks.

I would have thought that sice the passenger side was locked, it too would have made the differential spin since the drivers side wheel was on the ground. Is that because the drivers side wheel is the power wheel? I am differential retarded.

I am semi-retarded sometimes, I guess. I found out what the problem was. Here's how.

Like I said above. When the drivers side hub was in the air and locked, and the passenger side was on the ground with the auto locking hub still in place on that side, the driveshaft would spin. But I didn't realize the autolocking hub was engaged in the lock position on the passenger side at that time. I did put the transfercase in 4WD. But I am just a newb. So the driveshaft turned because both axles were locked. But when I tried spinning the rotor with the passenger side locked and the drivers side unlocked, the driveshaft did not spin.

I locked the manual locking hub on the drivers side with the passenger side in the air, and locked the passenger side as well. That allowed the driveshaft to finally turn.

Morale of the story. With either wheel in the air and the other on the ground. Both hubs have to be locked in order for the driveshaft to spin. DUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
