main bearing
« on: Feb 07, 2006, 06:59:28 PM »
I have an 84 toyota pickup, and the tranny would make sort of a whining/churning noise at idle, although it would decrease/or stop (hard to tell which) when the clutch pedal was pressed.  I was told that it was most likely the main bearing (don't know if that's the correct term for the bearing) just behind the throughout bearing (not the input bearing).  It is the bearing you see after removing a cover at the rear of the bell housing & is at the base of the input shaft.  After removing the 2 c clips I realized that taking this bearing out wouldn't be easy (probably pressed on?).  In the manual it shows this bearing being the last thing to be removed when taking the tranny apart (which I don't want to do), does anyone know how to remove this bearing using a simpler technique?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would reccomend ordering one from marlin. If that bearing is bad, there is a good chance (depending how long you drove it) the main shaft could have wear on the teeth, I wouldnt take a chance just replacing one bearing with out doing the other ones. see a pro on it
(time = money)

Take a second look at you pilot bearing and thow out bearing maybe you will get lucky

Is that the notorious input bearing failure on the old toy transmissions? Id check with marlin for an updated bearing kit if they sell one. good luck. :turtle:
