It's got a Volvo something in it, according to nate (he's a boat mechanic you know) it's a volvo penta.  He also says I should install a spare gas tank cause they're thirsty.  He sure is a swell fella!!

Fixed it for ya!

Look at the outdrive, dollars to donuts it says volvo penta on it.  How big is the engine for it?  If you're guessing mid 80s and this thing is around 20ft it should atleast be a 4.3 chevy.  It'll say volvo on it, but unless it's a 4 cyl it's probably not their own engine.  If it's 4.3 it's probably not quite as thirsty as the 4cyl either.  Tough to say from the pics, but I'd guess it at 19ft, but there should be a plate somewhere near the rear that should have the specs.  Congrats!  Makes me wanna go pick up mine too, but my landlord just got back for xmas so I think I'm gonna wait till right after he leaves again.

I'll probably be up for another 30-60 minutes so I'll make sure I check this thread last.  I'm curious too.  Sadly I don't know much about these cause I mostly deal with OMC/bomardier crap......yes, I mean crap.  I'll hafta snap a couple groovy pics of the powerhead we just changed out on a brand new engine(less than 100 hours I believe) and post em here if you want, pistons look horrible!

Ok Nate, it's the Penta motor, and from what I could tell on the number bar, the last 4 digits are 184-4 :headscratch:

Strange, dunno what that means.  If you can snap a pic of it tomorrow.  Is it a plate with a bunch of manufacturer info or just like a vin# tag?

It is wierd, it's like a plastic strip with the numbers soldered into it... kinda sloppy.. I'll take a pic tomorrow and post it up  Doesn't look like a manufacturer tag though :dunno:

Ok, but there should be a tag somewhere with all the boat specs and manufacturer info, maybe just inside the boat somewhere.  When you're cleaning it out keep your eyes peeled for it.  And don't forget to slap a good coat of moly lube on the outdrive splines before you slide em into the engine, just don't get any on the end of the shaft.

What's the key to successful boat ownership?  Be smarter than the boat!  I've seen a lot of kooky stuff over the years, and know it can be very enjoyable if you do the proper upkeep and preperation.

Key things to remember, always disconnect your battery when you park your boat, even if it's only for a couple of weeks.  You wouldn't believe how many people's day, weekend or whole vacation seem to be ruined by a dead battery, and usually their family gets the brunt of their frustrations.  And don't forget to check it before leaving the house, batteries at the lake aren't cheap.

Fill your gas tank before going out in your boat!  Gas costs way more at the lake, and once again this often ruins people's fun.  You should see people's reactions when they had to pay for 100+ gallons at around $4 a gallon.  Also, if you're gonna park your boat for any length of time you really need to use a fuel stabilizer.

Install the plug before launching, and carry a spare.  Wait, on the other hand, forget it at home, it makes for great entertainment for us!!

Always set the parking brake!!!  I've seen a couple of rides go into the lake, most recently in august.  Ever seen a new tahoe with only the hood peeking out of the water?  You don't really wanna laugh with the family there in panic, but this guy really pulled a big boner on this one, but luckily it was at the end of their vacation.  Tahoe was a total loss, along with a lot of electronics too.  I think he was in too much shock to feel like an idiot, but you can usually tell the guys that feel like idiots cause they take it out on everybody around them.
