Power steering in FJ55
« on: Mar 15, 2006, 06:41:56 PM »
I have moved my front axle forward 4". Making it really tuff to do a normal sagina P/S conversion. I have seen a picture of a 55 with the steering box mounted further back along the frame with the pitman arm pointing forward instead of backward.

Has anyone seen this ????

I really don't want to mount a scout box outside the frame, I believe I have room between the Rad and P/S pump for a box on the framerail. Just need the pitman to rotate opposite the saginaw box.

Thank you in advance,
Norm

Didn't Ford use an inside box on the early Broncos?  If they did I'm sure is big $$$$

thats not a bronco box its 69-79 2wd f-series box put people them on EBs what you want is a             76-79 f-150 or 78-79 big bronco box with the pitman arm pointing forward if you use any other box
and just point the pitman arm forward the steering wheel will turn the tires the wrong way and it mount outside the frame

Corrupt hit the nail on the head with an 8# sledgehammer.
If I can hit the junkyards ( if the snow has melted enough ) I will look for the box style. I was hoping to tap into the vast ammount of knowledge here.

The question is what steering box has the pitman arm facing the front of the rig ???

If you can't use the saginaw and don't like the scout then you should look at the '79-'85 toy mini or the astro.

The mini uses the stock bellcrank and drag-link and is a very popular mod on a 55.

The Astro box mounts inside the frame and has the pitman pointing forward.  This mod is common on 40s but might work on a 55...

I am facing the possibiility of being a pain in the azz. Not intentional.   :help:  :help:

It's not that I don't like the scout box. The high steer I ordered has a drag link for a Saginaw FJ40 so If I mount a box outside the frame I need to re-order a longer link or modify the current one I have......

Was hoping to find a box to mount inside the frame with the pitman facing the front of the rig. Hopefully a 4 turn lock to lock box also but that is splitting hairs.

Thank you for all the replys as the battle continues.... :smack:

I did a conversion on a buddies 55 and we used the astro van box and it works AWESOME.  We ordered a high steer kit and just replaced one of the weld in bungs with a standard one and used a rod end.

If you are going to use the ford box, you can findF a tapered drill bit and drill it yourself.

If you didn't sink to much $$$ in the box it is definately worth looking for a ASTRO box.

Just my 2 cents

I just went to the pick and pull and yanked 4 more astro boxes to use.  They had a special day all you could carry out for $40.  I think with everything I toted I had to be carrying 400lbs plus.

Let us know how the steering worked out for you
