You should be able to find the timing specifications(which I dont know for a 22re) under the hood on the emmissions label.  You need to connect a timing light to the positive and negative battery cables and also to the #1 plug wire.  There is a timing mark on the bottom pulley(crank pulley) and also a pointer along with numbers showing how many degrees before top dead center you are currently at-all these marks may need to be cleaned up so you can see them clearly.  Adjust by loosening the distributor mounting bolts and moving it while the engine is running and pointing the timing light at the crank pulley to see where you firing #1.  Dont know how much of this you already knew, but I hope it helps!

On the passenger fender there is a little elec box about 1"x1 1/4" that has a snap top. Inside of the box you will see about 9 little connectors. 2 of the connectors need to be jumpered with a piece of wire or paper clip. I will need to look up the connector numbers for you.
When they are jumpered the engine rpm will drop and you will be align the marks. By the way the book says you should be a 5 degrees but I found that my truck runs a lot better in the 10-15 degree range.

The terminals are TE1 and E1
As you are standing by the tire looking at the engine, one terminal is in the upper right corner and the other is in the middle row(I think it is 2nd from the top. Inside of the cap will give you the terminal ID's.

Another thing. When you jumper the terminals you should hear a difference in how the engine is running and the timing will retard as will be seen on the crank pully and timing mark. IF THERE IS NO CHANGE then your T.P.S. will need to be adjusted. Let us know if there is no change and we can show you how that is done.
