2002 Tundra 2WD conversion to 4WD - chassis compatability
« on: Sep 27, 2005, 09:21:02 AM »
G'day.
We've got a guy in our shop/store today, who wants to convert his 2002 Tundra 4.7 2WD to 4WD.  My question is - has anyone done 2WD Tundra conversion to 4WD?

I'd like to find out if the 2WD chassis is the same as 4WD?  It has 6 lugs wheels.  Would it be just a matter of getting t-case, front differential, other stuff from junk-yard and just bolting this up to the 2WD chassis?  I've been told that some front suspension components are the same on 2WD and 4WD.

SAS would be nice but that's major surgery - how about just getting 4WD components (junk yard/eBay) and will it bolt up?
Thanks.

Update - the owner of this Tundra 2WD has decided not to convert it to 4WD.  So, this thread may be deleted.
Thanks.

Yes, it's my Cruiser in my avatar.  Here are pics of it - it's still not finished - 2 years and no progress.  I am planning to start continue working on it in Winter 2005/2006 after I finish my Nissan D21 Hardbody frame swap/SUT conversion.

SPECS: 1981 BJ44-V import from Japan, drivetrain stock, 4 speed (H41?), split t-case, 3.2 Diesel 2B motor.  Body cut-off, partially tubed. SPOA, cast Hy-Steer arms, TLC80 power steering, conversion to left hand steering (LHS), TLC60 steering column, not finished exo cage, stock PTO winch (not installed yet)
SOLD:  alloy 15"x10 American Racing rims with 35x12.50R15 Grabbers MT, going to get steel beadlock wheels and 36" Simex Extrene Trekker or 38" TSL
RECENT UPDATES: Summer 2005 - TLC60 axles are bought, rear is FF , R&P 4.88 are in my garage there, just need to install it.
TO BE DONE: finish rollcage/exo, axles rebuild (thinking about longfields or something), chromoly Hy-Steer arms, chromoly drag link and tie rod.
PLANNED: ARBs - front & rear, shackle reversal upfront - keeping the leaf springs), rear 1/4 elliptic, additional electrical winch 24V in front, snorkel, GPS, 4pt harness and some sport bucket seats.
