My father has a G58 trans in his 87 4runner that he wants to put a crawler box in.  However no one makes an adapter to bolt a crawler box two this trans or the t-case he is using due to the 26 spline shafts.  I have an old G52 trans and matching t-case that came out of my 85 pickup.  Is it possible for him to rebuild his G58 and have the trans shop to put the back shifter section of my G52 on his G58?  If so, would this weaken the G58?  This would also him to bolt a crawler box to the trans.  We also have a good top-shift t-case to us in the rear of this setup.
Also, is there a strength difference between the G52 and the G58 trans?  Or should he just rebuild my G52 and use that trans in whole?

Thanks

Cannon

Actually, we have an Adapter and Coupler made for the G58 to convert to a RF1A gear drive t/case, but we needed to make some changes to the couple, so this adapter kit is still not quite ready yet...

Yes, he will need to use the G52 output shaft and the G52 trail housing + shifter base. The t/case shifter will be nearly in the same location, maybe off by as little as an inch.

If so, would this weaken the G58?

No, the weak area of the G52 compared to any post G54+ trans, is that the bearings are smaller and I believe the shiftforks were originally steel which wore out quicker. So the output shafts are the same OD so it will not affect the strength of the G58.

That is correct. If you use a top shift t/case, then you will have to cut a new hole in your cab and use a different shifter boot combination. Also you must make a block off plate to cover the hole on the G tailhousing.
