rebuilding my auto??
« on: Aug 12, 2005, 04:50:37 PM »
does anyone on here have experience rebuilding a toyota auto tranny? I am going back and forth on a 5sp swap or rebuilding it, if I have someone do the rebuild it will run at least $1600  :screwy:  so that is out of the ??, I found a site that sells rebuild kits and tech manuals and have been thinking of giving it a go myself.  :screwy:  but I have never done tranny before.

before you say just throw in a 5spd let me tell you the truck will be used for hauling tools around until hunting season then it will haul elk hunting supplys and goose decoys, I don't plan on any rockcrawling or mud bogging the toughest trail would be a logging road in the rockies or a corn feild and I am getting lazy  :sleepy:  in my old age and the auto works for that.

Be a lot cheaper to pick up a used unit with less miles than yours.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

Could some $ be saved by pulling it and re installing it yourself ? May lower the price if there is no labor for the shop to drop the trans then re install it, just a thought, you are in a pretty tough spot, a 5 speed swap will cost some coin as well.

Dude- I'll sell you a whole truck with an auto in it that runs and drives for $2k.  See my "1990 4x4" in the for sale section.  :pokinit:, I'll even trailer it to the NM/Colorado state line for you.  You can trailer it from there to denver (since it's not registered or anything...)
'84 Hilux, locked, dual-cased, winched, EFI converted, 37" tired, half-doored (in the summer...)
'87 Supra, 400 HP.  smooth as glass at 130 'cause my tires are NEW!...
'92 F250 Diesel, tow rig, ATS Turbo, leveling kit, killer stereo

thanks for all the help. my problem is solved I found an 87 truck with a rod knocking in boulder for $550 on craigslist, couldve drove it all the way home but I got tired of running 30mph and we decided to drag it the last 1/2. so now I have everything for the 5sp swap and a wider rear axle and other parts I can use, I will try and document the swap for others who want to do the same.

I have a good automatic in Wyoming if you are still interested. It is from a '90 4Runner with a 3.0. Do you have 3.0 or 22R in your trucks?

I am in Gillette, in the Northeast corner. The transmission from a 3.0 will not bolt up to your 22R, so it won't help you.

It is complete and has a transfer case if you know anybody looking for one. I'll let it go cheap, probably just trade somebody for something I need or whatever.

I'm doing the swap on my runner.  I had to piece my parts together though.  It will be nice for you, having the donor truck.  Good luck!
