the L series came stock in the first generation trucks, there not that strong. I believe that the R series is the strongest out of a 4 cylinder, and of course the W56 is pretty good.

Thats an L series as you've been told already.  The L series is basically the same as the G series as far as over all strength goes.  As the years progressed the trannies got stronger ans beings thats fromt he first gen well ya get my drift....

Its not the strongest trans but if your not banging gears every shift it'll hold up to a lot of abuse. Just be carefull to not beat on reverse, it'll break...  ;)

L45, L50, or L52.  i've heard the L52 is similar internally to the G52 but with a shorter tailshaft and different case.

i've got an L50 or L52 in my truck, it's working pretty well but second gear is a little picky sometimes(synchro i think) and 5th is a little noisy.  im gonna save up some cash and probably trade it in for a marlin built unit this winter, along with dual cases.  wasn't a bad upgrade from the L43 i had in the truck, though.

someone posted the order going L, G, W, and R series... are you refering to the order in which you'd use them for wheeling? or the order in which they were built.. year wise?

the G series doesnt offer dual cases, i have a L series tranny and it hasn't given me any prob's.

A Gseries dual setup IS doable...and those are listed yearwise AND strengthwise...as years progress, they get stronger, with the R series being strongest.

you can do duals on any tranny except for the G58, since it was an oddball with a 26 spline output.
