Water in E-locker
« on: Jun 19, 2005, 07:43:00 PM »
So my front HP E-locker stoped working on me. At first i thought that if must of just gotten jammed in the open position, not a big deal. SoI pulled the motor to lock my diff and remove my third try to figure out what happened. with the motor removed I tried to jumper it and it still didnt work so I figured that it must be someting internal in the motor. I pulled the back case off a WATER poored out :maddest: . The inside was all rusted and corroded. I dont even see how water could get in in the first placeit is a 2 peice housing that has an O-ring seal and the Feild magnets have an O-ring seal also. The only place i can see water getting in is throught the breather tube but that has a plug in it and it is in there pretty good. At this point I dont know what to do I cant imagine how much a new shift motor would cost. or that rebuilding this one would be worth it. so I am thing about doing the cable mod. But I just dont know what to do the whole thing just really pisses me off.
I would Take my truck offroad but then it would get dirty

I don't think the cable will work in the front on a pickup because of the leafspring perch
I did have downey's cable kit on the rear in my truck

I had the e-locker in the rear of my truck
I ran into the same problem. once water was in and it corroded my motor acted like it was shorted when i tried to power it directly. Mine wasn't even as bad as yours
By the way a new actuator is like $500 Thats my cost at my dealership
Needless to say tried cable and still wasn't happy
Sold it and bought a detroit

I started cleaning everyting up and I got the Motor part to work. My only concern now is that some of the teeth on the plastic gear are messed up so I hope it will still work when I get it together.

I Also found what I think to be the source of the water. The case looks like it got hit by something and in it put a little dent in the side where it mite of separated the two half's enough to allow watter to leak past the seal. I dont know what might of been able to hit it in this location, it is half way up the side right under the leaf.

I just noticed you had the plug still in the breather tube. I dont' know if this is how water got in but I'm using the factory harness from the actuator to the frame. That pig tail also has the breather tube with a breather cap on one end and a male nipple that slides into the tube you have pictured with the plug in. I would maybe try to run a longer breather tube.

yeah I have the extended tube in the rear and in the front just I never got the front hooked up. That is not where the water got in. the water got in where the case half's seal together. something hit them and separated them just enough to let water get by the o-ring. before i cleaned it up you could clearly see where it happened. so I am going to file the bump down and once I figure out what to do about the gear. I am putting a new o-ring in and silicone then to gether also.

If your repair doesn't work, here's another option. Works on front and rear. http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=5003.0
