Money 2005
« on: May 09, 2005, 11:56:31 AM »
Yesterday I reformatted the hard drive on my computer because I was having several stupid problems and reformatting always seems to fix things.  This time I think the problem was a combination of changing virus software and service pack 2.  In any case I moved all important information to the D drive prior to reformatting.  Everything worked well except that my Microsoft Money 2005 wouldn't open or restore so I got to rebuild my finances.  A few months ago I updated to 2005 from 2001 or 2002 and it has caused me nothing but trouble.  The new online/netpass/password features are a royal pain in the tail.  I even stumped tech support the last time.  That time I deleted my netpass account and then couldn't access my file, it was a mistake on my part, but there seemingly was no backdoor into the file/program.  My advise is to keep what you have it you are happy with it.

When you changed virsus software did you leave the old software installed? If you didn't that could be your problem get rid of the old virus software they could be fighting with each other. Plus service pack 2 can have its issues too if it didn't come already installed on your computer when you first bought it. No I'm not a geek I listen to Jeff Levy every weekend on KNX 1070 and these are some of the issues he addresses with people and computer problems. It is a call in show and he also gives an on air computer lesson on how to do neat stuff with your computer every saturday and sunday at 12:00 noon. He does in real-speak not geek lingo. You probably don't get the show up north there but I would imagine if you wanted to call him and have him address you troubles he'd go ape over having someone call him from so far away.

If you are having problems with Microsoft Money 2005 when you try to restore a back up file after a computer reformat or on a new computer, I figure out the problem last night.

Microsoft, in their great wisdom, made Money 2005 update the program version automatically when hooked to the internet.  The problem results from storing a back up file using the latest version and then trying to use it on the original install that is an older version.  It turns out that all you have to do is start a blank file and the program will update automatically and allow you to open the new file.
I thought that I had lost a bunch of data in the past because the files won't open, but as it turns out, there is a solution.

I'm wondering if an back up file might not work if the program version got ahead of the file, rather than behind?

I've always been Apple at home.  Have to use a PC at work, though.  As for the money issue, how much is the time you spend dealing with all the problems worth?  Plus the money for anti-virus and tech support?  I just picked up a PowerMac Dual 2.0Ghz G5, 2.5Gig of RAM, and a 19" LCD monitor for under $2K.
