has this been done before?
« on: Jul 12, 2003, 12:00:55 AM »
I have 2 pick up trucks:

1984 22R 5 Speed ( Good T-case )
1993 22RE 5 Speed ( Bad T- case )

I want to swap the 1984 T case into the 1993. From my reasearch here I gather that the 1984 is a "forward shift" unit and the 1993 is a " top shift" unit. Can I convert the "forward shift" unit into a "top shift" unit?

absolutely.

Everything is compatible and identical except for the shift rods, forks, and top base plate.

Just use the rods/forks/base plate from your bad 93' to swap into your good 84' carbed case.

Correction-

New data I have come across says my 1993 is a forward shift as well. So I assume none of that swapping is needed. Now I should just need to swap the cable drive speedo for the electronic sensor. I assume that will work. I should just be able to swap the whole rear of the t case out and bolt it on the other one right?

Well actually Toyota made two different versions of the forward shifting transfercase.

1) 1984 - 1988 22R
2) 1989 - 1995 22R-E

(2) has slightly shorter forward shifting rods as compared to (1)'s rods. So you must swap your (2) rods into your 84 case. The top shift base I was refering to was the transmission base as it is different on the later-W56 (W59) compared to the G52/4 base plate.

I guess I shouldn't have mentioned the word 'top'
