22re injection for carb swap
« on: Apr 18, 2004, 04:42:44 PM »
I am sure this subject has been hashed and rehashed, but......I have an 84 22R that I want to swap injection onto off of an 85.  I have a complete wrecked 22re pickup 4x4.  Will this work with my head??  the cam??  I know they are different.  Any websites that detail this would be great.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.  I could do a quick rebuild on the 85 head and maybe a cam swap and change the whole works at once.  I'd need new timing as I converted the 84 to a double chain setup.  Thanks for the help.

i take it yours is an "early" model engine...e.g. with the rounded valve cover?  if so, snatch the lower plenum off an '83 or '84 celica with a 22RE, and tap the missing stud holes onto your head(there's a couple not on the 22R head, but the bosses should be there).  the '85 upper plenum will bolt to the lower plenum from the celica and you'll be able to use all the rest of the '85 guts

only thing i think you'd need to add is a knock sensor.  i believe you can weld a nut to the passenger engine mount and screw it in there

If your 22R is a late model 84 chances are your head will already be tapped for EFI, I know mine was. Best way is to look at a EFI intake and compare.

It'll work I transfered a 1985 Celica EFI into my first truck, had to use a 1987 truck 22re harness and throttle sensor and change out fuel tank for EFI electric pump. LC engineering has the block off plate for mechanical pump.
