Question about 22R Motor Mount Compatibility
« on: Feb 09, 2022, 09:33:49 AM »
Hey guys newbie here. I searched the forums rather extensively before I decided to post here.

I have an 81 RN38 I picked up about a month ago. While driving on these terrible NorCal (Sacramento) roads I noticed the transmission had a lot of movement even from the slightest bumps. Took it off-roading and had to stop from how excessive the transmission was moving around. I forgot to mention I removed the shifter/transfer case shifter cover to see down. Anyways I replaced the transmission mount, OEM Toyota. That didn’t fix it. Then I looked at the motor mounts and they look pretty shot. I gathered some info that I needed this part number that fits my 81 Pickup (5140135150 & 5140235150) but they’re NLA. I refuse to buy anything other than Toyota because of my past experiences with premature failure. So a Toyota Parts guy told me to try these part numbers (1230135210 & 1230235120). Toyota says they’re for 1989 2.4 M/T 4WD and up. The only issue is they’re $400 with Tax and I don’t want to take the risk of buying them and having 35% restocking fee added to my return if they don’t fit.

SO my question is do any of you more experienced folks know if an 89’s would fit my 81? I know they’re the same engine I’m just not sure if where they mate to the frame are the same holes/placement.

Call me out if you find another related thread, maybe I missed it. Anyways thank you guys in advance.

If you wheel hard even the OEM mounts don't hold up. I tear them out as fast as I put them in. Aftermarket mounts hold up but they do transfer more noise and vibration.

Marlin has a mod where you put a bolt through the driver side motor mount to keep it from tearing apart. I get away running the stock "modified" mounts but the T-case mounts never hold up for me.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'd suggest buying the oem mounts somewhere other than the dealer, $400 is silly. I thought 20R/22R/22RE mounts where all interchangeable, regardless of year but I could be wrong.

Try giving these guys a call. They both sell and install the mounts so they should know what works.

Or as suggested do Marlins mod and keep your current mounts. https://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=95884
