Floor jack recommendations
« on: Aug 14, 2021, 03:26:34 PM »
Hey Everyone!

I am looking at upgrading my floor jack and need some recommendations. I currently have a 2.5-ton craftsman from Ace and I’m not gonna lie, I’m concerned when it’s raising the vehicle and I’m getting calluses from the sheer amount of rosary beads I count when I’m lowering the truck (‘83 pickup 4x4).

From using my current floor jack I can say that I need something around 2 tons and with a valve release that allows the truck to be lowered with precision. Plus something that allows for an extension to reach the frame. So my question is: What does everyone on here like to use? Floor jack vs. bottle jack? Pro Eagle vs Harbor Freight? There is a lot of info out there but I don’t see much from sources I trust so here I am!

Thanks for the Help and sorry if this is the wrong section

I forget the weight rating and cost on mine.  It's from NAPA. and it says LYLE on it(maker?)  It lifts my Tacoma with ease.  The best part is lowering it.  It doesn't take a lot strength to turn the handle.  So as I twist there is a substantial amount of control...No sudden slamming the truck back down on the concrete.

It's quite heavy but for a jack, I like that.  If i could pick it up with one hand I'd question the strength.  It has worked well for 5 years.  Don't forget the grease.

I have ½ dozen jacks - 3 floor jacks and 3 bottle jacks.

I buy a ton rating that is about 1 ton over the gross vehicle weight.

I think the last 2 floor jacks I bought were from Harbor Freight.  One lasted at least 20 years.

I won’t pay the extra cost for an aluminum floor jack as long as I’m still strong enough to muscle around a less expensive steel one.

Bottle jacks are very inexpensive and provide way more ton rating.  NAPA has a 4 Ton for $35.00.  Walmart has a 6 Ton for $27.44.

I have two sets of 4 jack stands.  One set is 51 years old.  I have a 4 ton bottle jack that is also 51 years.

There are plenty of good choices and brands.

Let us know what you decide to buy.
