22re smokes, good compression.
« on: Nov 10, 2020, 04:12:05 PM »
Picked up a 1987 4Runner, 22re, 173k miles, one owner.  It has been sitting since 2013.  Replaced all the fuel system and got it running.  After idling the engine smokes bluish white. Smokes alot after idling when I rev the engine. I did a compression test and have between 180-190 on all four cylinders.  Any easy ideas before I tear the engine down?

Give it some time before you do anything.

If you're lucky, problem might go away.

Pour some Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase to help loosen things up. If after a some time the problem doesn't abate, then consider a more in depth investigation.

Unless the owner prepped the engine for long term storage, for an engine to be sitting for 7 years and NOT have any rust or corrosion in the cylinder walls and all through the coolant ports and tubes would mean there has been Divine intervention at the highest level.

Unfortunately, you will most likely have to completely rebuild that engine to get it running right.  :disturbed:

That's just my worthless opinion.

I poured some MMO in the oil when I changed it.  I will give it some time and keep running it. I thought about pulling the plugs and pouring some MMO on top of the pistons then letting it sit a few days.

He did not prep it for storage. The gas tank and everything inside it was extremely rusted.

Does it smoke more when you accelerate or when you let off the gas? Smoke under acceleration is more rings, let off valve stem seals. Valve stem seals can also cause a lot os smoke on start up, as oil drips onto the valve when its off and then burns off.
If you see it, its for sale.

I ran it some more this weekend.  It seems to smoke less while driving but smokes plenty when you let it idle for a few minutes then rev it up, I assume it's burning all the oil that's building up from idling. It seems to smoke a little under acceleration and not so much when I let off.

I just don't understand how it can have good compression and bad rings?

That sounds like a Valve stem seal issue

I plan to do a leakdown test and go from there.

Did a leakdown test.  All the air leaking by is coming out of the oil fill cap.   Google says anything over 20% is bad so that makes me believe the valve stem seals are the culprit.

I have not seen that.  Pretty good idea.  The rear main seal and oil pan gasket are leaking so I will probably pull the engine and just replace all the gaskets and seals at one time.

Just to update.

I finally got around to getting insurance and a tag.  Drove the 4runner about 25-30 miles this week.  It runs great.  Only smoke I noticed was after letting it idle at the carwash.  Revved it up and the smoke cleared out.  Plan to drive it occasionally to see if it gets any better.  Funny thing is it's the quietest 22re I've ever had.
