NO Headlights!!
« on: Sep 24, 2020, 12:43:06 AM »
Hi all!
Well,I finally retired my '81pick up-swapped the axles into an '82 I bought without axles a while back. Swapped the power steering from the '81,installed some high zoot H-4 headlights, added a 105 amp 10si alternator and had a pretty good truck. Then it quit. Discovered a badly hammered carb,so I installed a Weber carb, and had a good truck again. Then the Headlights and the high beam indicator quit. So did the turn signals. Took the multi switch apart and cleaned everything up,and the signals came back. They quit again a couple of days later. STILL can't make the headlights work. I've tried 3 different headlight relays (swapped the relay for the tail lights in,no luck, tried BOTH relays from the '81,which worked fine,no luck), I'm outta ideas.. Has anyone here run into this, and if so,how did you fix it? When I turn the headlights on,I can hear a relay click, but that could be just the tail light relay. I heard mention of a fuse link near the battery that's alleged to be just for the headlights;could that be the problem?
I've noticed the power steering is still pretty stiff, even on the '81 the P/S was better than without P/S but now it's even more marginal-is that pretty normal on the 1st Gen. Toyota 4X4 trucks?Once I get lights again, all that's left to do is building front and rear bumpers, grille guard a hitch and spotter hitch for the front and install my winch. (It'll need a new windshield, but it won't get THAT until the Cops say I HAVE to replace it.)  ;) Well,if anyone out there has an idea on these lights,I'd sure appreciate some help.

Do you have power from the combination switch and from the battery to the head light relay?  If so, than the problem lies between the relay and the lights.

If memory serves, Toyota grounds the light circuit at the switch.............
