Grinding/Noisy/Clunky 4wd
« on: Oct 25, 2017, 01:41:44 PM »
Hey all.

I have a 1981 LWB 4x4 pickup.  I got myself stuck yesterday trying to get out of a drainage ditch I had parked in, so I engaged my hubs and threw it into 4 high.  When I let off of the clutch I heard a grinding clunky noise.  I pulled my self out of the ditch, and tried to take the truck out of 4wd and the gear selector would not budge.  I tried rolling back and forth and still no movement.  I finally gave it a whack with my palm and it slammed back into 2 high with a grinding noise.  I have been meaning to rebuild my front axle for a while now, but this truck is my daily and I haven't had a block of time long enough to finish a full axle rebuild.  That being said, I don't think the problem is in the axle because I have used the 4wd before with no problems and no noise.  So I believe that my t-case is faulty.  Should I look for a replacement, or is there some trouble shooting I can do to narrow my issues down?   What should my next step be?
