What transmission should I get?
« on: Jan 29, 2018, 09:19:53 PM »
I have a 1980 pickup with a 22r engine. It had the l43 for Speed which is now bad. I really want to upgrade to a stronger transmission and a 5-speed. I was told that if I used a transmission that had a transfer case with a passenger side drop it would bolt to my motor. So I bought a transmission the other day from a 94 4Runner with a 3.0 thinking it was a w56. It turns out that the transmission is a r150f and I'm finding out if I want to make it work I'll need a bell housing from a 22r turbo or a $475 adapter. I'm sure the turbo bell housing will be hard to find and I don't want to spend $476 on an adapter. I don't mind doing welding or fabrication to get the cross member where it needs to be and I have the t case from my l43 and the r150f. So what transmission should I be looking for?

A w56 is what I would go with

If I were you, i would be looking for 84-87 w56a or w56b you could put your t case on the the back of it and move your cross member back.

I swapped in a w56 into my 81 deer lease truck. Only mod was to move the transfer case crossmember back ~4" and shorten/lengthen the driveshafts. You can re-use the rear most factory bolt holes on the frame in the front two holes of the factory crossmember and just weld on some tabs on the frame to capture the other two.

Can also use a stock rear drive shaft from the truck that came with the w56 if both are the same wheel base.
