'85 22RE TPS drama
« on: Feb 13, 2017, 08:54:36 AM »
 :maddest:
I have now currently been fighting this thing for 3 days.
Lost the lower screw to my TPS, replaced it, and it caused a maladjustment. followed the "crawler cheat" link for how to reset the TPS. to no avail.could get a reading on it at all. So. I went and bought a new TPS. pulled off my throttle body, old tps, cleaned everything. made sure my throttle stop screw was set right. got everything all prepped.

Tested the continuity of NEW TPS before putting it on the throttle body, and from VTA-E2, it only reads about 112 ohms... theoretically, even uninstalled, out of the box it should read between 200-800 ohms, correct?

Thought for shits and giggles, id do the same check on the old one. it reads 176 ohms. and thats after dropping rapidly from 216.

am i doing something wrong? do have bum sensors all the way around?

Go to Google, type in " lce tps adjustment". There a pdf link, this may help

Downloaded and printed that off for reference. It did give a little extra info on where throttle stop screw should be with the added 1/4 turn from touching.

Cold start this morning went well. Fired right up. But HIGH idle. Like 2k, till warm. Then started slow surge again. Started around 1300 rpm, took about 2-3 seconds to build up to around 2k, then instantly fell again. Did this repeatedly.

Still TPS ADJUSTMENT? Giving that another wiggle with an ohm meter before I go tearing off the throttle body again.

The way i set the TPS is using the idl circuit. Set it closed obviously throttle closed.  Open just as throttle cracks.
hold this. . .

If all other adjustments are set correctly, I found a quick way of setting the TPS that works better than most ways I've tried (factory manual, drill bit for partial open throttle...) but, start engine with TPS screws just loose enough to be able to adjust the sensor, start turning it towards you from the top, radiator side, engine should stumble, if already stumbling, turn it the other way just to smooth idle and you're done, tighten the screws. I'd replace them with Allen head screws(12mm long,) while you're there, easier to tighten the lower screw with a ball Allen wrench.  Passed smog in Commiefornia with blazing colors this way.   :twocents:
